Some very enthusiastic children and parents warming up for their sports carnival today. Rugby, Football, Baseball, Cricket, Basketball and a mini-marathon. Some tired but satisfied athletes at the end. It was great to see everyone loving sport just as much as we do.

Have you ever wondered what playing high level sport is all about?

You will know about the intensity, the physical ability and high skill level required.

But once you are on the field it really is just about coming up with innovative and creative solutions to solve problems. We observe what’s needed and act accordingly. We also manage risk, understand our own capabilities, we work on our limitations and we never give up. And we do it quickly and decisively.

Do I pass or dribble? Do I aim for the hole or lay-up short. Left or right-foot, inside or outside, bunt or home run.

It’s not just about winning, even though winning feels amazing.

Sport should be an essential part of every child’s development - win, lose or draw, who cares; we get to learn lessons about life that we could never get in a classroom; just get out and play.

Is being in a sports programme really the magic ingredient in success?

Quite often as parents, we enrol children in activities because we want them to excel or improve in that area – think Maths, Chinese, Music, Art etc.

Sport is different – in addition to learning sports skills and techniques, when you enrol your child in a sports programme, they will learn about leadership, teamwork, communication, dealing with success and failure, time management, fatigue, accountability, preparation, continuous improvement. They will also learn about themselves – their personality, character and pushing their limits.

All of the coaches at Shaws Little League, whilst being highly proficient at developing skills etc, pay attention to your child’s long-term development. It requires a different approach to just drilling children on sports skill acquisition.

At a young age, there is no need for a child to have the best dribbling skills, the perfect golf swing etc – that all can wait. What is important is that children develop the building blocks for success, regardless of what future endeavour they choose. That is what we do at Shaws Little League.

Listen, try hard, play nicely, have fun!

Children find it difficult to listen sometimes. But as long as they listen to the important bits, then all ok…

We are often asked whether a team or individual sport is best for a child?

Our answer is – why not them them play both and while you’re at it, don’t just focus on one team sport and one individual sport. Do not look at sport in isolation – also think through the activities that your child has – if there are many individual activities, then maybe a team sport is best.

Team sports are also great if a child needs to improve their communication, cooperation and social skills.

And even if a child excels in either an individual or team sport, it has very little bearing on whether they will become great in the future. Remember all those children that were fantastic at English – did they become the next Shakespeare or JK Rowling?

Children at school for various subjects have to do both group and individual activities – sport provides additional and lots of experiences for a child to work independently and in a group.

So let your child try what they like and make sure it works for your time and energy as well. And remember that when your child enrols in a sport – they are not just learning sports skills, they are also learning skills for life.
