Short Write-up regarding the event

Bhai Mardana Sangeet Festival
(Nov 9-11, 2012 | Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya, Malaysia)

The Cheras Vaisakhi Kirtan Darbaar Programme has now been running successfully since 1999. We all have been enjoying thoroughly blissful spiritual moments year in year out since its inauguration. About a year ago, the executive committee of the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM) felt that it was time to organise a Cheras-style Kirtan Programme but this time only for “non-professional jathas” i.e. our very own local and regional talent. It was felt that in recent times, with the emergence of many Ragis from abroad, the birth of new local kirtan jathas has come to a stop. The once popular Naujawan Satsang programmes (Wednesdays in Petaling Jaya, Tuesdays in Titi Wangsa, Thursdays in Tatt Khalsa, etc) have now become Satsang Programmes. It was felt that it is now time to remedy the decline of the emergence of new local talents. Hence the SNSM set up a sub-committee in December 2011 to organise this new event. The objectives are very simple:

* To revive & develop the local kirtani talent
* To bring back the local kirtani jathas onto the kirtan stage
* And to bring back the Naujawan Satsangs to all gurdwaras

Salient Points

Hence the birth of the Bhai Mardana Sangeet Festival. Below are some salient points about this programme:

* The name was chosen for two simple reasons. First, since this is a sangeet festival, it is a celebration of Bhai Mardana ji who provided the first music accompaniment to the shabads sung by Guru Nanak ji. Second, it gives the programme its own identity.

* The word ‘festival’ is used simply to make the programme more youth friendly.

* The dates for this programme, ie 9, 10 & 11 November 2012 were seen to be suitable being close to Guru Nanak ji’s birthday, school holidays and as a catalyst for the upcoming annual samelan.

* The organising team felt that for the first year, the programme should be short and sweet, hence the three days (2 days to be exact).

* PJ Gurdwara was chosen as the inaugural venue, (i) to keep the cost down, (ii) it is convenient, (iii) GSPJ was the first to offer its premises for this programme, and (iv) the availability of the Geeta Ashram car park facilities for the outdoor programme.

* The outdoor event was planned again to make the whole programme more appealing to the younger generation. The outdoor event is to be held outside the Gurdwara premises on the first night, ie 9th Nov 2012 from 8pm to midnight. Only Gurbani will be sung by the groups selected, along with a rebab and traditional musical instrument recital, a solo tabla performance and a performance by the Dasmesh Band (subject to last minute changes).
* The second day starts from 4pm and will go on all the way to 8am the next morning, ie a Rehansebaee Kirtan in the Darbaar Sahib.

* To make the programme even more appealing to the youth of today, the 2nd night will also feature a “midnight food cravers’ hideout”. From midnight to about 5am, stalls will serve “delicious and different” foods. The food served will be for free, ie sponsored by well wishers.

* The main movers of this programme are the young and dynamic youths from Oh My Guru (OMG), which is a youth project of the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia, Gurdwara Sahib PJ and various other Sikh organisations. To know more about OMG, please read the attachment. Estimated Costs
The estimated cost to organise this event is to the tune of RM 26,200, which includes the cost of the sound system, marquees, transport for outstation sanggat, printing, Rela services for security and traffic management, etc. Funding
