Inspiration behind design:

‘The Rose’ is a song made popular by Westlife. The first line reads ‘Love is like a razor, it leaves the soul to bleed’. Love can hurt, and to dream is to risk disappointment. I represented this through the blood dripping from the rose.

Yet, the song goes on to say:

It’s the heart afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance
It’s the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance
And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

It reveals how despite the risk, we must risk anyway. Instead of closing our heart to love, we must love and dream, for that is where living and fulfilment lies.

While acknowledging the pain, the song ends with a hopeful assurance:

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed
That with the sun’s love
In the spring
Becomes the rose

It’s beautiful, and I’ve shed many tears to this song. It speaks deeply to me and has inspired me to love despite the pain and loss I’ve been through. It’s a reminder that no matter how tough and arduous love may seem to be, it will eventually be worth it.

With time, patience and perseverance, your seed will become a rose.

I incorporated a heartbeat as the rose stalk, to represent this belief our heart will beat for.

May this shirt remind and anchor you of this hope…

To Never Give Up
And Never Give Up on Love.
