At Bekok, we travelled light, slowed down, and let nature lead.

Beside the waterfall, we paused, observed and sketched — capturing the flowing water, rocks, light and energy of the forest.

Our Travel Light , Sketch Deep Art Excursion is not about creating a perfect picture. It’s about being present, seeing deeply and turning a moment into lines and memories.
Sometimes, when we carry less, we experience more.

Sketching Beyond the Result

For me, sketching is no longer simply about pursuing a beautiful result or mastering a technique. It is about learning to see the world differently.

Living in the city, we can easily become comfortable within our own environment and take things for granted. Yet beyond our familiar surroundings is a world rich in different cultures, communities, traditions and ways of life.

Sketching gives me a reason to slow down, observe and connect.

When I sit with my sketchbook in a village, an old house or an unfamiliar community, I begin to notice things I might otherwise walk past. More importantly, I meet people, hear their stories and learn something about how they live.

The finished sketch may not be perfect. That matters less to me now.

What matters is what I have discovered while drawing.

Cultural exchange should also come with humility and respect. When we enter another community, we should not assume we are there to give or teach. We are there to listen, understand and learn from one another. Every community has its own knowledge and wisdom.

Perhaps this is what art means when we talk about learning, unlearning and relearning.

Technique teaches us how to draw. Experience teaches us how to see.

A meaningful sketch can hold much more than lines and colours. It can hold a conversation, a friendship, a memory and a deeper understanding of another way of life.

In the end, perhaps the greatest value of sketching is not what appears on the paper, but what changes within us while we are drawing.

We start by sketching the world around us.

And somewhere along the journey, the world begins to sketch something into us.

Travel Light. Sketch Deep. Experience More.

During our recent Travel Light, Sketch Deep Paloh–Bekok Art Excursion, we had a special opportunity to sketch with the Orang Asli community during one of their birthday celebrations.

Under the red canopy, we sketched, chatted and laughed together. People gathered around to watch familiar faces slowly appear on paper. Every sketch became a small connection and a shared memory.

We came to draw, but went home with something more precious — warm smiles, friendship and beautiful memories.

Sometimes the best part of an art excursion is not what we draw, but the people we meet along the way.

Travel Light, Sketch Deep™ | Paloh–Bekok Art Excursion
Sometimes the most meaningful journeys are not measured by how far we travel, but by how deeply we connect.
Over three unforgettable days, our group discovered the heart of Paloh and Bekok—not as tourists, but as artists, storytellers and friends.

Day 1 – Arriving with Open Eyes
We met at Woodlands, travelled by train to Paloh, and enjoyed a delicious local lunch before meeting our wonderful local artist, Serene, and the friendly Paloh sketching community.
As the sun began to set, we gathered at the breathtaking Big Bean Hill, overlooking rolling coffee plantations, the winding railway line and the distant town of Paloh. Together we explored aerial perspective through sketching, shared stories during our Show-and-Tell session, and ended the evening with a joyful BBQ dinner under the open sky.

Day 2 – Coffee, Heritage & Community
The morning began with one of the most heartwarming experiences—sharing sketchbooks, laughter and creativity with children at a tiny hillside primary school surrounded by farms and oil palm plantations.
After enjoying Paloh's famous Red Wine Rice Noodles, we stepped back in time to sketch inside a nostalgic Hainanese kopitiam before visiting The Big Bean Roastery for a coffee cupping experience and learning about Paloh's rich coffee heritage.
Our heritage walk led us to old temples, traditional Malaysian houses beside the mosque, and warm conversations with generous local residents who welcomed us into their lives.
Another evening of sharing, reflection and an unforgettable dinner reminded us that simple places often serve the most memorable meals.

Day 3 – Into Nature and Culture
A scenic drive through endless oil palm landscapes brought us to Bekok, where we visited a charming home bakery famous for handmade cakes and traditional desserts—supporting another passionate local family business.
We sketched beneath the cool shade of a beautiful waterfall, enjoyed lunch and coffee in a quiet roadside café, before spending the afternoon at an Orang Asli village.
There we experienced genuine hospitality—joining a birthday celebration in the neighbourhood, sketching local hunters, dancing with children, sharing smiles, and learning that art truly has the power to connect people beyond language.
As our train carried us home from Bekok, our sketchbooks were filled not just with drawings, but with friendships, stories and memories that will last a lifetime.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported our One Artist, One Book™ initiative. Your generosity will help bring the joy of reading to children, proving once again that art journeys can also create meaningful impact within the communities we visit.

Travel Light. Sketch Deep.
Because the best souvenirs are never the sketches we make—they are the friendships we build, the kindness we receive, and the stories we carry home.

I had the pleasure of visiting my former student, Farhan to see his latest series of sketches inspired by Singapore's neighbourhoods and everyday life.

What impressed me most was not simply the quality of his drawing, but the way his sketches have grown beyond the pursuit of technique. Every piece reflects careful observation, empathy, curiosity, and quiet moments that most of us walk past without noticing. From hawker centres and MRT rides to void decks and fleeting encounters, he reminds us that art is not only about drawing well—it is about seeing well.

As artists, we often spend years chasing technical mastery. Technique is important, but it is only a language. What truly matters is *what* we choose to say with it. Farhan's work shows an increasing awareness that sketching can be a way of documenting life, asking questions, preserving memories, and finding meaning in the ordinary.

Art does not have to search for extraordinary subjects. Sometimes, the richest stories are waiting just around the corner—in our neighbourhoods, among familiar faces, and within the rhythms of daily life.

Seeing this body of work gives me great joy as a teacher. The greatest reward is not watching a student draw better, but watching them discover “why” they draw.

Keep observing. Keep questioning. Keep sketching. The world always has another story to tell.

Congratulations, Farhan. I'm looking forward to seeing where this journey takes you.
