Tropical Lab Singapore

Tropical Lab Singapore The Annual International Arts Camp at LASALLE College of the Arts There are only islands.” – Jacques Derrida

Islands are nature’s debris.

TROPICAL LAB is an intensive and highly engaging fourteen-day international arts camp, bringing together students from various art colleges and institutions around the world. The event will include a series of talks and seminars guided by established international and Singaporean artists culminating in an exhibition at the end of the camp.

“There is no world. Broken away from the whole since the

beginning of human consciousness it has been a creation of nature’s wrath. Yet with human evolution, the idea of a relationship to the concept of an island as an imaginary to articulate the human condition resides most poignantly in John Donne’s oft-quoted opening line of his poem ‘No man is an island’. Visualised often as a castaway, exotic, uninhibited, fearful, lonely, etc. it is a potent compression of a country, a nation. Islands are imagined, visualised and romanticised in many ways but it is but an object and an objection in the vast seas. Tropical Lab 9 will draw student-artists from all over the world, bringing them together to learn about Singapore and that of its neighbours. Singapore, an island that was founded as a free port, remains one of the busiest ports of trade and a site of negotiation for cultures, identifies and practices over the centuries. It represents islands of the 21st century who are integral and key to world-making.

This year has been a whirlwind of unfortunate incidents and here at Tropical Lab, we had a list of promising artists that would be coming to LASALLE College of the Arts to experience a special two weeks of exchange, exploration and learning. However, with travel restrictions during the pandemic, Tropical Lab 14 had to be cancelled.

Despite all that, we are trying to work around the situation and have decided to re-orientate our efforts this year into showing support for the artists that have had their entanglements with us. For this year, we will be launching Image and Sound In Spite Of, a microsite hosted by LASALLE College of the Arts to feature the works of LASALLE staff, alumni as well as Tropical Lab alumni, and to hopefully signal boost their practices through our platform.

Also, as an attempt to re-think the efforts and online presence of Tropical Lab, we have decided that the different channels of social media will be streamlined. The blog and page will still be running and hope to provide details and insights to previous Tropical Lab renditions while also hope to engage with future participants.

So please do follow us on those platforms and we will try to keep everyone updated with details and exciting news.

Till 2021. Wishing everyone the best at this juncture and hope that you will stay safe within your realms of temporal newly formed normalcy.

Day 4: Pulau Ubin! The scorching heat and high humidity wasn't enough to stop us from cycling and walking around Pulau Ubin, a visit that has made tradition in all years of Tropical Lab. Our very own personal tour guide and artist-lecturer Steven Lim brought everyone around the tiny island, a tiring yet fulfilling experience immersed in nature and island life.

Day 2 & 3: Getting familiar with one another's works! We had a day and a half filled with presentations from all 28 of our participants. It was interesting to see all the different areas of research and art mediums explored and utilised by these artists. Featuring some images of presentations by participants from Columbia University, Mongolian State University of Arts and Culture, Institute of Arts Indonesia and others!
