What does it take to successfully transition from running a salon to managing a specialty coffee bar? Meet Fabien, Cafe Supervisor at Monday Coffee Bar.

Driven by a deep curiosity about the coffee industry, Fabien leveraged the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) in 2024 to pivot his career entirely. Today, he combines his rich background in business and sales with his passion for specialty coffee.

Beyond the brew, Fabien’s favourite part of the job is the community—from the new connections made across the counter to the ongoing support from his trainers and friends at Bettr Academy.

Today, you can find Fabien running the show at Monday Coffee Bar, located at 209A Clementi Ave 6 (do take note that their Ang Mo Kio branch has closed). Come by, grab a brew, and say hello to him!

Meet Paul. 👋 He’s a bartender and barista at Bettr Coffee, a past student at our academy, and a proud mid-career switcher!

Paul decided to leave his corporate job behind in search of a more fulfilling, hands-on life. We recently caught up with him to get a glimpse of his day-to-day role at the cafe.

It all comes down to Professional Tea Cupping. Think of it as wine tasting, but for the world of tea. Here is exactly what it is, why it matters, and the satisfyingly precise setup behind it.

What is professional tea cupping?
Professional tea cupping is a standardized, highly regulated method of evaluating and grading tea. Just like coffee cupping or wine tasting, it strips away the variables of casual brewing to judge the tea's true, raw quality. It relies heavily on olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) senses, as well as visual inspection.

Working at a cafe comes with its joys and challenges. This is Paul, bartender and barista at Bettr Coffee and a past student at our academy.

Through our conversations, we got a glimpse of his day-to-day role at the cafe. We realised that a job in F&B is truly hard work — from standing all day to facing difficult customers and working with much younger teammates. When we asked Paul if it was worth it, his answer was still a yes.

Paul joined the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) with a specialisation in mixology. Since then he has been a key member in supporting daily operations at the cafe and at events. Calling all coffee professionals: The Q Grader Program is now open for 2 April! This is your last chance to enrol at the academy for 2026.

️What is the Q Grader?
The program is the global benchmark for coffee quality evaluation, designed for experienced coffee professionals seeking to deepen their sensory expertise and earn the internationally recognised Q Grader license.

️What happens in a Q Grader course?
Through six intensive days, learners will be assessed in cupping, sensory analysis, and green coffee evaluation using the latest Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) tools. There will be 9 exams, 8 practicals, and 1 written assessment where participants will receive their 3 year license after passing all tests.

️Who should sign up?
Coffee professionals involved in coffee trading, sustainability, roasting, and quality control. The Q Grader license is also for individuals seeking credentials for having the comprehensive skills to evaluate coffee at the highest level within the industry.
