The same essay question, but two very different model essay versions — one for higher-ability learners to stretch their thinking and language, and another for students who are still working on sentence fluency and grammar.

One of the biggest challenges in teaching is constantly adapting the same resource to suit different students’ abilities and learning needs, even within the same level. A lot of time goes into tweaking materials, giving feedback, and preparing differentiated resources. Hence, when I say teaching slots are full, they are truly full.

“Why are your model essays so much harder than what my teacher gave?”

My P5 daughter asked me this after comparing my 看图作文 model essay with one shared by her school teacher.

My answer was simple:

👉 Because the higher standard is intentional.

AL2 and AL3 are very achievable for disciplined, hardworking students.

But AL1 requires more — deeper language sense, sharper expression, stronger structure, and the ability to apply skills confidently under exam pressure.

That is exactly what my model essays are designed to train.

If a student’s goal is AL1 / Distinction in PSLE Chinese / Higher Chinese, then the harder work has to start early and consistently.

After this conversation, she began asking me how certain phrases could be applied across different scenarios. Seems like a promising start for P5. 😅

📄 Sneak peek: Here’s a snippet from a model essay I developed for my Sec 3HCL private group this week, based on a question one of my students flagged from Catholic High 2025 Sec 2HCL SA2 exams.

There have been several enquiries about my Sec 1CL group class over the past few weeks. After much deliberation, I have set the start date to early July, as all current weekly class time slots are fully taken.

For group classes, all are currently full, except for Sec 3CL Saturday group class, which has 1 remaining vacancy.

I am extremely grateful for the significant number of new referrals and the 100% retention rate from my 2025 students who are progressing to the next level. Thank you very much for your continued trust and confidence in my work.

Tuition lessons are finally resuming this week 😊

For year 2026, I will be introducing a new programme: P6CL 1-to-1 Composition Writing Coaching (Online), conducted on selected weekday afternoons. Sessions will be available for booking from mid-January onwards, with lessons booked in blocks of 4.

This programme is ideal for students who need targeted support to level up their composition writing skills, with personalised guidance tailored to individual needs.

End-of-Year Exams may be over, but learning isn’t.

My Sec 1 students shared that their schools did not cover 写人记叙文 and 必学成语 this year — topics that some schools actually include in their syllabus and exams. So here I am, stepping in to bridge those gaps with my own specially developed materials.

I may not run a big tuition centre, nor do I offer as many levels or time slots as others. But what I do offer is focus — I take pride in being a specialist who identifies learning gaps and targets specific weaknesses with structured, well-crafted materials, customised to students' needs.

I believe that true progress happens only when there’s trust, teamwork, and mutual respect between tutor, student, and parent. That’s why I choose to work with families who share these same values.

Work in progress to help my Sec 4HCL students patch their learning gaps for Paper 1 after Preliminary Exams...

As always, to coach them to write essays with mature content and strong vocabularies require a lot of scaffolding and guidance. Hoping that we can make the last one month of our lessons fruitful and useful.

Another 看图作文 Model Essay that my P6CL group class did as a 口头作文 for me last week, with plenty of prompting and guiding from me along the way.

I guess coaching students to write AL1 看图作文 has become one of my greatest strengths after so many years of teaching.
