A Summer Holiday Extra, Japanese Memories at a Singaporean Table🇸🇬

Summer has come to an end, and the season is gently shifting toward autumn. Even in Singapore, rainy days have become more frequent, making the heat feel a little more bearable.

Recently, a friend invited us over for dinner to reminisce about our summer stay in Japan. That evening, the four of us—our hosts, her husband, and my “Doctor”—gathered around the table. The main dish was grilled lamb with roasted vegetables. Since I rarely cook lamb, it was both refreshing and a great learning experience.

After the meal, with tea and wine in hand, our conversation turned to Japanese singers of the 1980s. To my surprise, she brought out magazines from that very era. The pages were filled with nostalgic stars who had once shone so brightly, instantly bringing back memories of “those days.” The highlight came when she played an LP from her treasured collection—none other than Momoe Yamaguchi. It felt as though the room itself was glowing, as if we had stepped back in time.

Her home is an HDB flat, the most common type of public housing in Singapore. While the exterior remains under government management, the interior had been beautifully renovated with a modern, stylish design. It reflected her personality in such a warm and inviting way.

Next, she and her family are planning a trip to Hokkaido. If we can join them, I’m certain it will turn into yet another wonderful travel story to share.

夏休み番外編、シンガポールの食卓で広がる日本の思い出

夏休みも過ぎ去り、季節は秋へと移ろう時期。シンガポールでも雨が降る日が増え、少し過ごしやすくなってきました。

そんな折、夏の日本滞在を振り返ろうと、友人が夕食に招待してくれました。彼女の旦那様、そして我が家の博士も一緒に、4人でテーブルを囲んだその夜。メインはラム肉のグリルに焼き野菜。ラム料理を口にする機会が少ない私にとって、とても新鮮で学びのある食卓でした。

食後は、お茶やワインを片手に話題が80年代の日本の歌手へと移ります。すると、彼女が取り出したのは当時の日本の雑誌。誌面に並ぶ懐かしいスターたちに、思わず「あの頃」の記憶がよみがえりました。さらに、彼女のコレクションから山口百恵さんのLPが流れると、その場の空気は一気に輝きを増し、まるでタイムスリップしたかのようでした。

彼女の住まいはHDB（シンガポールで一般的な集合住宅）ですが、室内はリノベーションされ、とても洗練されたデザイン。政府が管理する外観とは対照的に、内装は自由にアレンジできるそうで、暮らしぶりにその人らしさが感じられました。

次回は、彼女のご家族で北海道旅行を計画中とのこと。ぜひご一緒できたら、またひとつ楽しい旅の記録が増えそうです。

The Last Chapter of Our Fun Summer Vacation🌻

We spent our summer road-tripping around the Kinki region, laughing nonstop everywhere we went.

But as always, no trip is complete without a little mishap.

While having breakfast at our inn in Shirahama Onsen, my friend’s temporary tooth suddenly broke!
She said, “It’s fine, I’ll just chew on the other side.” But of course, it didn’t work that way, and she even ended up with a sore cheek.

There was no choice—we had to see a dentist.
It was right before the busy Obon holiday, but after some persuasive phone calls, we managed to get her an appointment. We had to move up our sightseeing schedule and head straight to the clinic.

Since it was such a last-minute request, we couldn’t show up empty-handed.
We hurried to buy plenty of gifts as a token of thanks before the
appointment.
The dentist remade her temporary tooth in just about 20 minutes.

I was worried the cost would be very high since she didn’t have insurance, but to our surprise, the total was only ¥2,200—cheaper than the souvenirs we brought!

At the end of the trip, she asked me, “What was the most fun part for you?”
I answered, “Traveling together with you.”
When I asked her the same, she replied, “Going to the dentist and getting treated!”

And just like that, our laughter-filled summer vacation came to a close in the blink of an eye.

楽しかった夏休み　最終回の巻🌴

近畿を車で巡り、笑いの絶えない旅を楽しみましたが、旅にはやっぱりハプニングがつきもの。

白浜温泉の宿で朝ごはんを食べていたとき、なんと彼女の仮歯が壊れてしまったのです。
「反対側で噛めば大丈夫よ！」と彼女は言うものの、そんなうまくはいかず、ほっぺに傷までできてしまいました。

やっぱり歯医者に行かなくては！
お盆前の一番忙しい時期に、無理をお願いして診察していただくことに。
観光予定を変更して歯医者さんへGO！

急なお願いに手ぶらでは失礼…と、急いで手土産をたくさん買ってから診察を受けました。
仮歯はその場で20分ほどで作り直してもらい、支払い金額はまさかの2,200円！
なんと、買った手土産よりも安かったのです。

旅の終わりに「今回いちばん楽しかったことは？」と彼女に聞かれて、私は「あなたと一緒に旅ができたこと」と答えました。
逆に私が尋ねると、彼女は「歯医者さんに行って治療してもらえたこと！」と。

こうして、爆笑とハプニングに彩られた夏休みの旅は、あっという間に幕を閉じました。

日本人会夏祭り

きつけの生徒さん達と一緒にいきました。
お稽古では、気づかない、お出かけして初めて、着て歩いたり座ってみたりして不具合いが見えてきたりします。

みなさんきれいに着れているし、問題はなさそうです。💦💦😓

浴衣だけでなく、夏の着物を着てお出かけしてみませんか？

ありがたいことに、毎回ウェイティングが出るほどの大人気クラスです。

8月のクラスは、夏休み🌻にちなんでおまけとしてヨーヨーつりもやりました😊
プールを自分の肺活量だけで膨らますのは大変だったけど💦😂

バタークッキー

毎回参加してくれる子どもたちは、段々とお料理がうまくできるようになってて、見ていても頼もしいですね😋

小さい子は、お父さんやお母さんとのご参加頂き賑やかなクラスとなりました。

9月は小籠包をはじめいろいろ作りますが、すでにお申し込みはウェイティング状態です。🙏💦💦

✨Fun Summer Break – Part 5✨

Our trip wasn’t just full of laughs—it was full of big laughs every single day! 🤣

This time, her special request was: “I want to try Kobe beef!”
So after watching the whirlpools in Awaji Island, we headed back to Kobe Sannomiya for the night.
Dinner was, of course, a full Kobe beef course 🍷🥩✨

At the hotel, we enjoyed a happy hour with free-flow drinks.
We toasted with wine and then indulged in Kobe beef sushi, beef stew, roast beef… a true Kobe beef feast!

During dinner, I explained that only beef that passes strict inspections can be called “Kobe beef.” Otherwise, it goes back to its original regional name.
She responded,
“Oh, so there’s no such thing as a living Kobe cow then?!” 😂
Well… technically true, but the way she put it was hilarious!

For dessert, I had arranged a plate with a special message 🎂
She was delighted—until she noticed something was off.
The word “Welcome” was missing the final “E”!
“Did someone eat it before us?!” she laughed, and of course, we laughed even harder.

✨楽しい夏休み 第5弾✨

私たちの旅は、爆笑じゃなくて「大爆笑」の連続🤣

彼女のリクエストで「神戸牛を食べたい！」とのこと。
そこで淡路島で渦潮を見てから折り返し、神戸三宮に宿泊。
夕食はもちろん、神戸牛フルコース🍷🥩✨

ホテルではハッピーアワーでお酒飲み放題！
乾杯のワインから始まり、牛肉のにぎり寿司、ビーフシチュー、ローストビーフまで、神戸牛をとことん堪能しました。

そして会話の中で「神戸牛はお肉になってから厳しい検査に合格したものだけがブランドとして名乗れる」と説明したら、
彼女がひと言…
『あ、じゃあ生きた神戸牛っていないのね！』って😂
確かにそうだけど、その発想が面白すぎる💦

デザートは事前にお願いしていたメッセージ入り🎂
喜んでくれたけど、よく見たら「Welcome」の最後の“E”が抜けてる！
「誰か先に食べた？！」とまた大爆笑😂
