The language of tabla is a unique oral system used in Indian classical music to express tabla rhythms through spoken syllables called bols.
Each bol matches a specific stroke or combination of strokes on the tabla:
• Right-hand (dayan) bols: Na, Te, Tin
• Left-hand (bayan) bols: Ge, Ke
• Both hands together: Dha, Dhin, Dhe
This language serves three main purposes:
1. Teaching – Teachers use bols to explain exactly how to play each rhythm.
2. Learning – Students can practice anywhere by speaking the bols, even without a drum.
3. Preserving tradition – Before notation existed, rhythms were passed down verbally.
In performance, artists often recite compositions aloud (padhant) before playing, showing precision and mastery. This makes tabla language both a learning tool and a performative art form.

A Rela (ਰੇਲਾ/रेला) is a composition based on a theme and variations, similar to the kayda. A Rela is fast-paced, typically performed in drut laya (fast tempo) or ati-drut laya (very fast tempo). Relas are known for their intricate, rolling patterns and rapid succession of strokes. Derived from the word "rail" (similar to the English word for train), a rela imitates the continuous, flowing sound of a train moving quickly along the tracks, symbolizing momentum and fluidity.
A Tukda (ਟੁਕੜਾ/टुकड़ा), derived from the Hindi word meaning "piece" or "fragment," consists of a compact sequence of bols (syllables) that form a complete rhythmic phrase, typically ending in a tihai —a rhythmic pattern repeated three times, ending on the sam (the first beat of the cycle). Tukdas are often fixed, but improvised tukdas and tukda variations are common too. Tukdas are performed in both tabla solo and accompaniment.
This particular tukda, set in teentaal (a 16-beat cycle), was originally composed and played by Ustad Alla Rakha Khan Sahib, the father of Ustad Zakir Hussain.
