Body Language (BL) TIP #5

5. BL tells the truth.
Body language does not know how to tell lies except if it is being forced to do so and, in that circumstance, if you pay attention to the right clues, you will know the person is being deceptive. If you ask liars what the foremost headache is when they are cooking up their lies, they will tell you that it is about making the right gestures to match up with the concocted words. Body language is connected to the unconscious realm. Hence, it reveals our innermost thoughts. Non-verbal gesture is the companion of truthful people. It sits in the central position of our conscience, supporting all our positive initiatives.
The sole duty of body language is to say the truth; it wants to reveal our thoughts to people listening to us and vice versa. As I have always said, if you are being truthful in your conversations, you need not bother on what the body language is saying. If you are being sincere, your body gestures will support all that you are saying. Someone who is tired does not need to convince you verbally about how they feel; by merely looking at them, you should be concerned about their look because it will surely be obvious to you that they are weak. If it is being feigned, the person will rather appear confused.
If you are on a truth-searching adventure, your best and most potent tool of investigation is body language. It is usually silent but powerful, revealing what people are capable of doing to you. Most times, people tend to suppress their feelings because they know that it is more revealing than their words. When you come to the consciousness of what the body is capable of doing, you will listen less to the perfectly fabricated words of liars and watch more at what their body is saying.

Body Language (BL) TIP #4

4. Is BL universal?
Well, let me start by saying that there is no an outright answer to this question—it can either be yes or no—depending on the concept that you are faced with. But for the purpose of our discussion, let me state that body language is a universal concept with regional differences. This means that although body language is widely acknowledged, there are some noticeable differences in its interpretations according to local community. This is what should be paid attention to but unfortunately, a lot of people tend to generalise everything. The incursion of American culture into many cultures of the world has made it a bit possible to have a unified form of interpretation of body gestures.
However, to be on the safe side, you need to understand the peculiarities of each culture. As a businessperson, you must spend extra efforts in understanding the culture of those you are about to deal with. This will make it possible to have a smooth, respectful, and fruitful discussions with them. A lot of people so much cherish their culture and will not take an excuse of ignorance from you. Hence, you need to live up to responsibility by decoding what each body language gesture symbolises, especially those that are likely to be used during your meetings.
All that I have been trying to say is that although body language is used universally but the meanings attached to it in different cultures are different. This is where the bulk of the work lies. The deepest part of communication is done non-verbally. This is where the gain of every business lies—your ability to understand and decode the unsaid. Being able to reveal what is supposedly hidden gives you the strength to argue in your favour. This is what every businessperson, especially those of international dimension need to understand.

3. Why BL is important in Business?
The importance of body language in business cannot be overemphasized. Permit me to say that it is the thrust of our life and since business is part of our being, so it plays a critical role in it. First, body language gives you the opportunity to have a smooth, productive and gainful discussion with your business partner. Without sound communication, business cannot take place. So, body language helps you to understand your business partner better which is the foundation of every business transaction. It gives you an insight into what the thoughts of the other person are all about.
In the same vein, it makes you transact business with the right group of people. Body language exposes the thoughts and plans of people to you. So, it makes you know if the person you are conversing with is the right person to deal with or not. Through body language, I have sieved through the lists of my business partners; once I discover that someone is trying to be dubious, I part way with him or her. This has helped me in so many ways and if you can internalize the use of body language gestures too, it will help you choose rightly too.
In addition, understanding of body language helps you make more gains. Through people’s body language, you know if they are enthusiastic about your product or not. If the person is displaying positive attitude, with little or more convincing words from you, the person is more likely to make a purchase or hire your services. Body language reveals to you whether someone is truly ready for business or merely trying to make enquiries. There is no gainsaying that you need the knowledge of non-verbal gestures to succeed as a businessperson. As we proceed in this lecture, you will have a clear picture of how it works in the business settings.

2. Scientific definition of BL.
The definition I provided you with in the preceding segment is practical and solely mine borne out my experiences over the years. However, I do not want it to look as if there is no scientific backing for this concept as many people have always argued blindly. Hence, I will provide you with definitions given by science to prove that it can be investigated using the tools of knowledge. Body language follows a system; it operates based on repeated patterns over the years. Let’s recount some definitions by scholars to strengthen the foundation of this discussion.
According to Richard Nordquist (2018), body language “is a type of nonverbal communication that relies on body movements (such as gestures, postures and facial expressions) to convey messages.” This means that body language derives its meaning from how the body is moved per time. Nordquist furthers that “body language may be used consciously or unconsciously. It may accompany a verbal message or serve as a substitute for speech.” This implies that there are situations that you do not have to utter a word but get your point communicated through the use of the body.
Another definition has it that body language “is a type of nonverbal communication in which physical behaviours, as opposed to words, are used to express or convey the information.” This definition is strengthening all that has been said since the start of this project. This definition lays emphasis on physical behaviour—how it is used in passing of information during a conversation.
However, Klimt, Edward and Belling, Ursula (1979) note very importantly that body language should not mixed up with sign language as the latter is considered as a full language with its own grammar system. Some people erroneously agree that sign language is body language. This is incorrect as sign language is only meant for a group of people while body language can be seen on everyone.

1. What is BL?
When I hear people ask me what the definition of body language is, I smile because it does not have a one-way rigid definition. The flexibility with which we define it tells you that it covers many areas. Sometimes, I try to push back the question to those who ask, especially if they are participants in one of my training programmes and as expected, their responses are often funny. Some of them will argue with the whole of their strength, telling me why their definition must be adopted.
Well, I usually ensure that the definition I give per time perfectly reflects the topic under discussion. Body language is a universal phenomenon that can be used in any given aspect of life. However, this workshop is based on how it can be used in the business world. Putting all these into cognizance, body language can be defined as a non-verbal means of communication which reveals the innermost thoughts of a co-interlocutor to you. In another way, it can be defined as communicating with the body. When your body gestures reveal what you are thinking, then that is what is referred to as body language communication. It deals with the body and our thoughts. Sometimes, people do not pay attention to what their body has to say but their verbal expressions that can be easily controlled and changed to suit their deceptive purpose.
Body language plays two basic roles, depending on the side of the divide you fall into—it plays a complementary role to what is being expressed through the mouth or exposes our hidden thoughts. If you are being truthful, then it will complement your talks to further convince the person you are speaking with but if you are being insincere, it will expose you through the gestures that would be let out.
