Body Language TIP #1

1. What is BL?
When I hear people ask me what the definition of body language is, I smile because it does not have a one-way rigid definition. The flexibility with which we define it tells you that it covers many areas. Sometimes, I try to push back the question to those who ask, especially if they are participants in one of my training programmes and as expected, their responses are often funny. Some of them will argue with the whole of their strength, telling me why their definition must be adopted.
Well, I usually ensure that the definition I give per time perfectly reflects the topic under discussion. Body language is a universal phenomenon that can be used in any given aspect of life. However, this workshop is based on how it can be used in the business world. Putting all these into cognizance, body language can be defined as a non-verbal means of communication which reveals the innermost thoughts of a co-interlocutor to you. In another way, it can be defined as communicating with the body. When your body gestures reveal what you are thinking, then that is what is referred to as body language communication. It deals with the body and our thoughts. Sometimes, people do not pay attention to what their body has to say but their verbal expressions that can be easily controlled and changed to suit their deceptive purpose.
Body language plays two basic roles, depending on the side of the divide you fall into—it plays a complementary role to what is being expressed through the mouth or exposes our hidden thoughts. If you are being truthful, then it will complement your talks to further convince the person you are speaking with but if you are being insincere, it will expose you through the gestures that would be let out.
