“It takes a whole village to raise a child”—a phrase that captures the unity, solidarity and kampung “can-do!” spirit of a community working towards a shared purpose.

At NUS High, our staff work tirelessly throughout the year to create a safe and nurturing environment where students can develop holistically, learn through authentic experiences, and live out the spirit of our motto: Experiment, Explore, Excel.

Fulfilling our bold mission to inspire and shape the future of mathematics and science education calls on our staff to think differently and work synergistically. At yesterday’s annual staff lunch, we celebrated this labour of love—our “heart” work—and honoured colleagues through the Long Service Awards and internal STAR Staff Awards.

To all the stars of NUS High: thank you for being the village that makes it all possible. Happy StAR (Staff Appreciation and Recognition) Day! 🌟

NUS High has always encouraged our students to think boldly 💡, challenge conventions, and turn ambitious ideas into reality. We are proud that many alumni have chosen the path less travelled by becoming founders.

Two of our alumni, Darell Chua and Kingston Kuan, have taken their start-ups to the global stage after being selected for Y Combinator (YC), widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious and influential start-up accelerator. YC has launched some of the most iconic technology companies of our time, including Airbnb, Stripe, Dropbox, and Coinbase. With an exceptionally competitive selection process, earning a place in a YC batch is a remarkable achievement and a powerful endorsement of a start-up’s vision and potential.🌟

Kingston co-founded Hebbian Robotics, while Darell co-founded Daqstra. Their journeys embody the curiosity, courage, and spirit of innovation that NUS High strives to nurture in every student. We are immensely proud to see them representing our community on the global stage and building the future.

Experiment, explore, excel!✨️

We are delighted to congratulate Koh Yi Qiao (Year 3) on achieving Gold 🥇 in the Preliminary Round and First Runner-up 🥈 in the Finals of the Upper Secondary Individual Category at the 9th National Text Recital Competition.

Through opportunities such as this, our students grow in confidence in using their Mother Tongue to communicate and express themselves effectively , developing skills that extend beyond the classroom and enable them to connect meaningfully with others.

Congratulations once again, Yi Qiao! 🎉

Ecology, experienced.🔍

Our Year 5 Biology students began their day before dawn🌅, setting off for Lazarus and St John's Islands to bring ecological concepts from the classroom into the field.

Through intertidal sampling, students investigated how invertebrate diversity varies across tidal zones before studying fiddler crabs 🦀 and their habitats at St John's Island. Working in teams, they applied ecological sampling techniques, recorded observations and analysed patterns within real coastal ecosystems.

Field experiences like these allow students to develop scientific inquiry beyond textbooks, transforming theory into observation, data and discovery.🌟

After all, there's no better place to learn about ecosystems than within one.

We would like to congratulate 🎉 the recipients of the SAF Young Leader Award (SYLA), Year 6s Adrian Bih and Baek Seohoon. The SYLA recognizes outstanding students who have demonstrated strong leadership qualities, critical thinking abilities, and a keen interest in Singapore's defence. Both students had opportunities to engage with SAF personnel, gaining a deeper understanding of Singapore's defence policies. We were also happy to welcome back P**n Cheng Jun from the Class of 2020 who presented the students with the award ❤️. He received the SAF Scholarship in 2021 and studied Evolution, Ecology and Biodiversity at the University of California, Davis. He shared with the school about his exciting journey transiting from school to service in the SAF, and growing as an officer. We are very proud of Cheng Jun, Adrian and Seohoon, and we look forward to seeing them serve and lead our community in the coming years! 💪

What does it take to excel at the Singapore Brain Bee Challenge? 🧠

For our students, their passion for neuroscience gave them the resilience and the confidence to reason through unfamiliar problems.

Congratulations to Yong Wen Xuan, who was crowned National Champion, and Zachary Chen, who achieved 1st Runner-up at the Singapore Brain Bee Challenge 2026, organised by NUS Medicine. The competition brought together nearly 200 students from 10 schools to test their neuroscience knowledge through written assessments and viva examinations, while inspiring the next generation of neuroscientists and healthcare professionals.

Beyond their remarkable achievements, we invited Wen Xuan and Zachary to reflect on their experience—from the aspects of neuroscience they found most fascinating to the strategies they used when faced with challenging viva questions.

👉 Swipe through to hear their reflections in their own words.

Congratulations once again to both students on representing NUS High with distinction. We look forward to seeing where your passion for neuroscience takes you next. ✨
