Repost from instagram.com/nuspresident - "Honoured to moderate a distinguished panel with the Presidents of Simon Fraser University, The University of Sydney, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD BUZZ), and UC Santa Barbara at this year’s APRU - Association of Pacific Rim Universities Annual Presidents’ Meeting.

We explored a defining question of our time: how AI is reshaping teaching, learning, research, and the future of universities. The opportunities are immense. So too is our responsibility to ensure AI strengthens our core missions in education and research while serving society responsibly.

My sincere thanks to President Dennis Lo and his team at The Chinese University of Hong Kong 香港中文大學 - CUHK for their warm hospitality and for hosting a successful meeting.

Congratulations also to my friend and fellow NUS alumnus, Professor Ho Teck Hua, on his appointment as the new APRU Chair. From his service as NUS Provost to his current role as NTU President, his leadership continues to inspire.

NUS is proud to have been part of APRU since its early years, and it is especially gratifying to see the network grow to 64 leading global universities. We must continue to collaborate and push boundaries together to create knowledge, drive innovation, and tackle the world’s most pressing challenges!"

Repost from instagram.com/nuspresident - "Last week, my NUS colleagues and I were delighted to welcome friends from Université Grenoble Alpes and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, led by their respective Presidents Professor Yassine Laknech and Professor Matthias H. Tschöp.

Our discussions reaffirmed a simple but powerful belief: the world's most pressing challenges can only be addressed through strong partnerships and a shared sense of purpose.

As we exchanged perspectives on research priorities and opportunities for collaboration, we also reaffirmed our longstanding friendships and commitment to deepening our partnerships in education, research and entrepreneurship.

By bringing together talent, ideas and expertise across Singapore, France, and Germany, we can accelerate innovation and create greater impact for the communities we serve.

The future is built through collaboration. Here's to strengthening partnerships, advancing innovation, and shaping a better future together!"

Inspiring dads: He helped son with muscular dystrophy and Asperger's dream bigger 21/06/2026

“Over time, I realised I could not let my fear become the centre of Aaron’s life. What mattered more was helping him live meaningfully and confidently.” – Michael Sim.

A father’s love is truly unwavering and enduring, and we just needed to share this inspiring story of Michael Sim, father of our third-year NUS Computing undergraduate, Aaron Sim.

From navigating Aaron’s muscular dystrophy and Asperger’s Syndrome to supporting him through some of life’s toughest moments, Michael chose hope over fear and possibility over limitation. He refused to let fear define Aaron’s future, empowering his son to live with confidence, purpose and courage.

Aaron’s story is just as inspiring. With remarkable resilience and grit, he has overcome obstacle after obstacle, including life-threatening situations, to pursue his dreams and forge his own path. In 2023, his perseverance was recognised when he was awarded the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Scholarship, administered by SPD.

Michael and Aaron’s story reminds us that resilience is not built alone—it is nurtured by those who stand by us, believe in us and never give up on us.

To all fathers at NUS and beyond: thank you for being the quiet strength behind so many journeys and achievements. Today, we celebrate your love, sacrifice and unwavering support. Happy Father’s Day! 🦁😍🤩

Young people who faced childhood adversities like abuse more likely to struggle at work: Study 20/06/2026

Skills, opportunities and team dynamics can help young adults thrive at work. But a recent study suggests that what happens earlier on in life can also affect how young adults experience the workplace.

Researchers from NUS and Griffith Business School found that young Singaporean workers who experienced childhood adversities like abuse, exposure to substance abuse and poverty, are likelier to struggle at work, with lower perceived health affecting their job security confidence, self-efficacy and optimism for the future.

The study adds to a growing conversation on youth well-being and workplace support in helping young adults thrive in the workplace.

Repost from instagram.com/nuspresident - "Thank you, Senior Minister of State Dr Janil Puthucheary for joining us at the launch of our Classroom Automated Virtual Environment at NUS (CAVE@NUS) and the demonstration of the Virtual Escape Room Simulation-based Education (VERSE).

At NUS, we believe innovation matters only when it creates meaningful impact. CAVE@NUS and VERSE embody this commitment—using immersive technology to deepen learning, foster collaboration, and equip students with the skills and confidence to thrive in the future workplace.

We are especially proud that VERSE is Singapore’s first in-house intra-professional nursing education initiative, developed through the partnership of NUS Information Technology, NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, and Institute of Technical Education, Singapore. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and a shared vision for educational excellence.

As education evolves, our mission remains clear: to create transformative learning experiences that inspire, empower, and prepare our students for the opportunities and challenges ahead."

"You can be the smartest person in the room but one important aspect in community development is the need to be able to empathise with the people you're working with."

Helping students encounter the human realities behind community development, while raising awareness of the challenges faced by vulnerable communities in Singapore, lies at the heart of Dr Kevin Tan's work.

A cultural anthropologist and lecturer at the Chua Thian Poh Community Leadership Centre (CTPCLC), Kevin believes that understanding communities requires more than classroom learning. Through ongoing fieldwork and research, he brings lived experiences into his teaching while deepening his understanding of Singapore's social landscape.

His latest project, conducted with CTPCLC Instructor Ms Kuah Ting Ting, explores Waterloo Street as an urban religious enclave. What began as a study of urban culture gradually evolved into a documentation of the lives of tissue sellers and other vendors who spend long hours outside the temples, many of whom face health, financial and caregiving challenges.

Through this project, Kevin and Ms Kuah hope not only to raise awareness of the realities that some Singaporeans continue to face but also enrich community development education by helping students connect theory with lived experience.

Repost from instagram.com/nuspresident - "Delighted to have had a week enriched by two meaningful conversations underscoring the importance of global partnerships.

Earlier this week, I had the honour of meeting Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu during his visit to Singapore. As one of India’s most dynamic and rapidly growing states, Andhra Pradesh is pursuing an ambitious vision for the future. It was a privilege to discuss opportunities for collaboration between NUS and Andhra Pradesh to nurture talent, advance innovation, and create opportunities that will benefit many across the region.

I was also pleased to welcome Dana Baschová, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Singapore, to NUS earlier today. Our discussion highlighted promising opportunities to deepen partnerships with universities and industry partners in the Czech Republic.

These engagements are a timely reminder that the most impactful solutions emerge when people, ideas, and institutions come together across borders. Through collaboration, we can unlock new opportunities and build a better future for our communities and the world."
