Day four. We visited the Kyushu National Museum. Opened in 2005, it is only one of four national museums in Japan. Beautifully located within a natural setting, the focus of its collection and display is on pre-moden Japanese art and intercultural exchanges in the region. We were given a backroom tour of the museum, including its conservation facilities. I was impressed by some interesting practices, such as displaying the results of a poll of its top ten artefacts and a space where you could interact with the objects.

The students had a fruitful time visiting the library and archives of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum. We also had a stimulating dialogue with Peofessor Masahiro Ushiroshoji, who was formerly the chief curator of the museum and played a pivotal role in the early discourse of Southeast Asian modern and contemporary Art. Prof Ushiroshoji then brought us to Biblitheca Lizard, his very own library that is also open to researchers. It's impressive in both its focus on Asian modern and contemporary art and its sheer quantity.

Congratulations to our alumna Amivavelda Priyono (class of 2023) for curating this show that will be held at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre!
Layer by Layer comes from a question about history is neither fixed nor whole, because it moves through people and time, shaped by those who remember and those who choose to forget. The exhibition brings together artists from Indonesia and Thailand who revisit fragments of the past to examine how memory and time accumulate, intertwine, and obscure. Through layered visual languages and the act of reimagining what has been silenced, these artworks reveal how memory resists closure. In doing so, they invite audiences to encounter history not as a single story, but as an ever-evolving terrain—fragile, porous, and perpetually rewritten.
