THE ORIGIN OF BAHASA INDONESIA
Asal-Usul Bahasa Indonesia

According to ChatGPT-4o
Menurut ChatGPT-4o:

The origin of Indonesian Language (Bahasa Indonesia) is closely tied to the history of Malay, regional trade, and the formation of the modern Indonesian nation-state. Below is a clear, academically accurate overview.

---

🇮🇩 Origin of Indonesian Language (Bahasa Indonesia)

1. Root: Malay (Bahasa Melayu)
Bahasa Indonesia is essentially a standardized modern variety of Malay.
Malay has been used for over a thousand years across Southeast Asia as:

- Lingua franca for trade
- Administrative language in Malay kingdoms
- Diplomatic language for inter-ethnic communication

Its earliest written forms include:
Kedukan Bukit inscription (682 CE) – Old Malay
Talang Tuo inscription (684 CE)
Tanjung Tanah Manuscript (~14th century) – Classical Malay

This shows that Malay was already widespread long before Indonesia existed.

---

🇮🇩 2. Pre-Islamic and Islamic Era: Spread of Malay

Malay spread through:
a. Srivijaya Empire (7th–13th Century)
A powerful Buddhist maritime empire centred in Sumatra.
Old Malay inscriptions from this era show Sanskrit influence.

b. Islamic Sultanates (13th–19th Century)
Malay became the language of:

Religious texts
Trade
Court administration

Jawi (Arabic script) was widely used. Classical Malay literature thrived during this period (Hikayat, Sejarah Melayu, etc.).

---

🇮🇩 3. Dutch Colonial Period: Birth of “Bahasa Indonesia”

In the early 20th century, Indonesian nationalists strategically selected Malay, not Javanese, as the foundation of a unifying national language because it was:

Already widely understood
Neutral (not tied to any dominant ethnicity)
Simple in grammar
Associated with anti-colonial networks and education

The term “Bahasa Indonesia” officially appeared during:

Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge) – 28 October 1928
> “Kami mengaku bertanah air satu, tanah air Indonesia…
Kami menjunjung bahasa persatuan, Bahasa Indonesia.”

This moment transformed Malay into a symbol of unity and nationalism.

---

🇮🇩 4. Post-Independence: Standardisation

After 1945:
Indonesia adopted Bahasa Indonesia as the national language

Institutions like Pusat Bahasa (now Badan Bahasa) standardised vocabulary, spelling, and grammar

New terms were created from:

Sanskrit
Dutch
English
Arabic
Local Indonesian languages

Bahasa Indonesia evolved into its modern form distinct from Standard Malay in Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore.

---

🇮🇩 5. Relationship with Malay Today

Malay and Indonesian:
Share the same linguistic base
Are mutually intelligible to a high degree
Differ in vocabulary, pronunciation, and formal style
Similar to British English vs. American English, but influenced by different histories (Dutch in Indonesia, English in Malaysia/Singapore).

---

📘 Summary

Period Key Points
- Old Malay (7th–13th c.) Early inscriptions, Srivijaya
- Classical Malay (13th–19th c.) Literature, Islamic era, Jawi script
- Colonial Period (1900s) Malay chosen as national language; new term “Bahasa Indonesia”
1928 Sumpah Pemuda Political declaration of Bahasa Indonesia
- Post-1945 Standardisation and development into a modern national language

---

📝 In short:

Indonesian is a modern standardised form of Malay, reshaped through history, nationalism, and linguistic development in the 20th century.

The People's Association video of my class at Chua Chu Kang CC in 2015. Fondest of Memories!! Thank you, People's Association.

Quoted from People's Association posting:

Classes with 58 year-old Malay language trainer Mr Yahaya are seldom boring. They are always peppered with stories on history and culture that make his lessons unforgettable.

“To master a language successfully, it is important to learn about its history and culture,” said Mr Yahaya.

Despite his age, he is also no stranger to new technology. To ensure that his students have sufficient practice, Mr Yahaya started a Whatsapp chat group where everyone communicates in Malay. He also arranges to live-stream his classes so that no one will miss them.

To further bond his students, he organises monthly activities for them.

For his dedication, Mr Yahaya was awarded the Gold Award winner for this year’s PA STARS Trainer Awards.
