Contemporary Issues in Mediation (CIIM), SIMI's student-led publication, reached its ultimate publication with the launch of Volume 10 on 7 November 2025.
We were honoured to have our Guest-of-Honour, Justice (Retd) Chao Hick Tin, officiate the launch. Dr William Ury, who wrote the foreword for the CIIM Series, sent special greetings all the way from the US, while Professor Joel Lee and Adjunct Asst Prof Marcus Lim, the General Editors, capped the evening with their “Last Word” on this novel publication. Prof Lee ended the meeting on a high note - with a magic trick that illustrated how everyone involved in mediation should continue to be a peacemaker and plant the seeds for peace in our polarized world through the practice of mediation.
A panel discussion, moderated by Eunice Chua, collectively painted the vast potential of student research on mediation and affirmed the value of CIIM and the potential of future mediation research by students. Amongst many other ideas, Melvin Loh mentioned frontiers such as the impact of mandatory mediation on the voluntariness principle; both he and Francis Goh, FSIArb, FCIArb cited mediation advocacy as an important topic to explore as young lawyers will likely become such advocates for starters; Francis also suggested mediation culture and mediation styles; while Faye Ng mentioned that mediation ethics from the AI perspective, and the application of mediation in specific areas of law (e.g. employment law), could be considered.
SIMI hopes that this will be the beginning of a new chapter, with the clarion call to the many NUS, SMU and SUSS and other students who were present, to consider taking up the call to continue writing on other platforms about mediation issues.
