Tan Tee Chie (8th on top row) was a young weight-lifting enthusiast with his younger brother, Tan Tee Yap (6th on top row)who later won the title “Mr Singapore” in 1953.
This photo, taken by the Evergreen Weightlifting Party in 1950 was a rare occasion in 1950.
Weight lifting in Singapore had its humble beginning, but the lack of equipment then did not deter these young men from pursuing the sport.

Tan Tee Chie’s painting, “1955 Hock Lee Bus Riots” captured the picketing against the sacking of their fellow workers in the book “700 years, a History of Singapore” punished by NLB as part of the Singapore’s Bicentennial celebration.

Tan Tee Chie (1928-2011) was born in Hainan, China. Upon graduating from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1951 in Singapore, he became a lecturer in his alma mater. A childhood Hainanese friend alerted me that she saw my late uncle’s painting hanging at a Hainanese man’s home. Apparently it’s a dear friend and neighbour of of my uncle living Norfolk/Cambridge Road. What a discovery!
