SFA working to minimise impact on supply after Malaysia curbs export of chickens 24/05/2022

Inflation is hitting us hard as Singapore imports almost all of its food supply from overseas.

The Russian-Ukraine war affected wheat prices which is a main ingredient used for chicken feed. The price of chickens soared partly because of the increase of the price of wheat. We felt the impact of higher oil and petrol prices quite immediately after the war but all these other impacts come months after as countries around the world prioritise their own consumption to stabilise prices thus they start to ban export.

Singapore imports around 34% of chickens from Malaysia. The ban of exports of chickens from Malaysia will greatly impact the supply of chilled chickens in Singapore. There may be temporary shortage of chilled chickens and prices will definitely soar.

This may be just the beginning of what we see of inflation in the coming months. We've not lived through this for a long time and many people are unaware of the impact this would have of their financials.

On a side note, petrol pump prices are still at an all time high with Ron 95 hitting $3.25. Electricity tariff rate is already at 27.94 cents per kwh as compared to 18 cents per kwh just last year.
