St. Joseph's Institution

St. Joseph's Institution St. It is the 3rd oldest secondary school in Singapore. The 2-year pre-university IBDP admits boys and girls (co-education).

Joseph's Institution (SJI) (圣若瑟书院 shèng ruò sè shū yuàn) is a Catholic secondary school for boys founded in 1852 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools or De La Salle Brothers. SJI offers its secondary school boys a dual-track education comprising an Integrated Programme (IP) and the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) Programme. The IP track is a 6-year programme leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Years 5 & 6. The SEC track is a 4-year programme leading to the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) examinations at the end of Year 4. Based on their SEC examination results, they can apply to continue the IBDP at SJI, or pursue courses at other junior colleges or polytechnics. At SJI, we focus on nurturing our students to learn how to learn and to learn how to live, so that they can be empowered to grow into persons of integrity and persons for others. We operate based on the values of Faith as our foundation, Service as our way, and Community as our support.

Joseph Tan (ML102) put in a strong performance at the Qingdao International Youth Regatta 2026, competing against talented young sailors from across the region.

The regatta provided Joseph with a valuable opportunity to test his skills on the international stage, gain valuable racing experience and learn from competing against other young sailors. He delivered an impressive performance, finishing 3rd in the ASEAN Optimist category and 5th in the Boys Open category.

Congratulations, Joseph, on these commendable achievements! We are proud of the determination and skill you displayed, and for representing SJI with distinction on the international stage.

🇸🇬⚽ Josephians Flying the Singapore Flag High!

Two Josephians. Two goals for Singapore. And qualification secured on the international stage.

We are immensely proud of Jadon Quah (FN604) and Lukyan Tan (FN517), who recently represented Singapore at the AFC U-20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers, playing their part in helping the national team secure qualification after finishing second in their group.

Singapore got their campaign off to a flying start with an impressive 3–1 victory over Bhutan — and it was a particularly proud moment for the SJI community as both Jadon and Lukyan got their names on the scoresheet for Singapore.

The team then showed grit and determination to secure a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Macau, before completing their campaign against Chinese Taipei. Across the three matches, Singapore did enough to earn their place in the next stage of the competition.

For any young athlete, the opportunity to wear the national colours is a tremendous honour. To see two of our Josephians not only representing Singapore, but also scoring for their country, is a special achievement for them, their families, their coaches and the entire SJI community.

Congratulations, Jadon and Lukyan! We are very proud of you. May you continue to pursue excellence with discipline, humility and courage, and always cherish the privilege of representing both SJI and Singapore. ⚽ 🇸🇬

SJI has made history, clinching our maiden NSG C-Division Boys’ Floorball title after defeating Xinmin Secondary School in the Final!
What a journey it has been.

When our C Division Floorball boys stepped onto the court this year, they carried with them more than sticks and a ball. They carried the dreams, lessons and hard work of a CCA that was only established in 2023.

In just three years, they have grown from learning the fundamentals of the game to standing at the very top:

It is about the early days.
The first time picking up a floorball stick.
The mistakes and the losses.
The lessons learnt along the way.
The countless hours of training.
And, above all, the decision to keep working, keep believing and keep getting better.

Three years. Three podium finishes. And now, GOLD.

To our boys — you have shown us what can happen when hard work meets belief, and when a team grows together with courage, discipline and trust in one another.

𝐎𝐑𝐀 𝐂𝐮𝐩 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞

As part of the lead-up to SJI’s Teachers’ Day celebrations, the ORA Cup, organised by the 5th Prefects’ EXCO, brought the SJI community together for an exciting and inclusive sporting event in support of SJI’s 175th Anniversary fundraising efforts.

More than just a friendly competition, the ORA Cup was a celebration of the Josephian spirit — bringing students, staff, parents and coaches together through sport while promoting the values of community, sportsmanship and service.

On the field, the Lasallian Staff secured an entertaining 10–4 victory over the SJI Student Selection. Coach Shahrin (SJI) led the scoring with a hat-trick, while Mr Syah Fidzuan (SJI Junior), Mr Syaifudin (SJI) and Mr Ang Ting Hong (SJI PSG) contributed two goals each. Mr Muntane (SJI) completed the scoring for the staff team.

The students, however, made sure the staff had to work for their victory! Competing with determination and commendable fighting spirit throughout the match, Akeem Rizqin (LE201), Lucas Wong (ML201), Kar Woh (MN303) and Armaan Sanjay (FN501) each found the net for the SJI Student Selection.

Beyond the final score, the ORA Cup reflected the strong bonds that unite our SJI community. It was a wonderful reminder that sport is not only about competition, but also about building friendships, strengthening community and coming together in support of a shared cause.

A fitting celebration of the camaraderie and community spirit that make SJI special — and a memorable way to lead into our Teachers’ Day celebrations.

Three SJI students were recognised for their outstanding achievements at the Special Awards Presentation Ceremony 2026, held on 31 August at the National University of Singapore’s University Cultural Centre. The annual ceremony celebrates students who have distinguished themselves across academic and non-academic domains.

The awards were presented by Senior Minister of State for Education, Dr Janil Puthucheary.

Aidan Lim-Aswira (ML102) received the Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence, while Tan Yu Jin Felix (MN103) and Mary Faith Gomez (ML512) were awarded the Prime Minister’s Book Prize.

SJI was also proud to have Josephians Ethan Chong and Sawako Maury (both from MN520) serve as emcees for this prestigious national event.

Established in 1974, the Prime Minister’s Book Prize (PMBP) recognises students who have demonstrated excellence in bilingualism. This year, 39 students received the award across the primary, secondary and pre-university categories.

The Lee Kuan Yew Award for All-Round Excellence (LKY-ARE) is a national-level award that recognises well-rounded students who have excelled in both academic and non-academic areas while exemplifying the Desired Outcomes of Education. In 2026, 12 primary and 12 secondary school students received the award.

Congratulations to Aidan, Felix and Mary Faith on this significant achievement! Their recognition reflects their commitment, talents and pursuit of excellence, and we are proud to celebrate them as members of the Josephian community.

We are equally proud of Ethan and Sawako for representing SJI with confidence and poise as emcees for this significant occasion.

SJI came alive with ideas, creativity and innovation as our Year 3 ArtScience students gathered for ArtScience IDEA 2026, the annual showcase of their work centred on the theme of Biodiversity.

Bringing together students, teachers, parents and external jurors, the showcase featured projects addressing real-world challenges in biodiversity, environmental awareness, resource management and biomimicry. Drawing on their observations and research, our students transformed ideas into creative solutions through experimentation, design and prototyping.

The Top 10 shortlisted teams took to the stage to pitch their ideas and demonstrate their prototypes before a distinguished panel of external jurors. Parents of the finalist teams were also invited to witness their children confidently share the thinking, learning and creativity behind their projects.

Our SJI C-Division Basketball team has successfully defended its National School Games (NSG) League 1 Championship, completing an unbeaten campaign from the pool stage all the way to the final.

The Josephians were outstanding throughout the tournament, dominating the pool stage with victories over Dunman Secondary (59–32), Bukit Panjang Government High (62–24) and Jurong Secondary (73–22), before carrying that momentum into League 1 with convincing wins against ACS (Barker Road) (73–30), ACS (Independent) (84–42) and Ngee Ann Secondary (69–43).

The knockout rounds demanded even greater resolve. A commanding 84 – 47 quarter-final victory over Dunman High was followed by a hard-fought 60–51 semifinal win against Presbyterian High. In every game, our boys displayed composure, grit and selfless teamwork — trusting one another and playing for each other on both ends of the court.

In the championship final, SJI produced another outstanding performance to defeat National Junior College 74–48, retaining the NSG C Division crown in emphatic fashion.

Congratulations to our basketball boys, coaches and teachers on this remarkable achievement. This championship is a testament to months of disciplined training, unwavering commitment and the strength of a team that always played for one another.

𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

On Saturday, 22 August, SJI collaborated with community partners SG Cares, Special Olympics and Brighton Connection to host “Our Family Big Playout – The Joy of Us!”, an inclusive family day that brought families, Josephians and members of the wider community together in a joyful celebration of inclusion, friendship and togetherness.

More than 120 Josephians from CCAs including Canoeing, Track & Field, Guitar Ensemble, St John Brigade and the Design & Innovation Club stepped forward to serve as game masters, performers and activity facilitators. From inclusive sports and games for persons with disabilities to lively guitar performances and engaging First Aid activities, our Josephians helped create a welcoming afternoon where everyone could participate, connect and have fun together.

We were also delighted to welcome Mayor of Central Singapore District, Ms Denise Phua, whose presence added to the significance of this special occasion.

Beyond the activities, the day offered our Josephians a meaningful opportunity to learn through service and encounter. Through their interactions with participants and families, they gained a deeper appreciation of diverse needs and experiences, and of the importance of empathy, respect and dignity in building a truly inclusive community.

Service lies at the heart of an SJI education. Through our Values-in-Action programme, VIA Scubilion, we seek to form Josephians with a heart for others and a zeal to contribute meaningfully to society. Experiences such as this remind us that building an inclusive community begins with being present to one another, recognising the dignity of every person and creating spaces where everyone belongs.

Our SJI B Division Table Tennis team delivered an outstanding performance at the National School Games 2026, emerging as South Zone Silver Medallists.

From the opening rounds to a closely contested South Zone Final against Raffles Institution, our Josephians displayed grit, consistency and teamwork, competing with determination and sportsmanship throughout.

Carrying this fighting spirit into the National Round, the team secured an impressive National Top 8 finish. In two hard-fought quarterfinal encounters against Hwa Chong Institution and Catholic High School, our players gave their all at the table, narrowly missing out on a place in the semifinals.

After convincing victories in the group stage earned the team a place in League 1, our young Josephians continued their strong run, overcoming tough opponents while displaying composure, determination and resilience.

Their journey took them to the National Top 8, where they faced Hwa Chong Institution in a closely contested quarterfinal. Although they narrowly missed out on a place in the semifinals, the team earned a Top 8 medal for SJI — a proud achievement that reflects their hard work, commitment and growth throughout the season.

Across both divisions, our paddlers have shown that the Josephian fighting spirit is alive and well — competing with courage, playing for one another and giving their best until the very end.

Congratulations to our B and C Division players, coaches and teachers on a commendable season.
