The SJI Literary Festival, themed Turning the Page, celebrates the power of stories, ideas, and imagination to open new chapters in our thinking and our lives. Organised by the English Language & Literature and Humanities Departments, it offered a vibrant celebration of language, ideas and imagination.
Students engaged in a series of thoughtfully curated activities, including Blackout Poetry, where creativity was distilled through careful selection of words, and Whispers of Wisdom, a reflective segment in which teachers and students shared their personal reading journeys and the enduring impact of literature.
The highlight of the festival was the Character Parade, where historical and literary figures were brought to life with energy and conviction.
Indeed, SJI hopes for all students to remember that reading is a lifelong conversation, and that the questions literature raises don't stop when we graduate. They grow with us.

On Saturday 11 April, the SJI Debate Society fielded two teams at the Infernus Cup Debate Competition, organised by the Nanyang Junior College Debaters & Orators (NYJCDO).
This year’s competition was themed around ideas inspired by the works of Aldous Huxley, exploring the delicate balance between progress and humanity. Designed as a platform for novice speakers, each team comprised developing debaters supported by an experienced non-speaking member.
In a demanding and spirited contest, 16 teams from 10 local institutions competed against one another. Over the course of the day, our SJI debaters faced moments of challenge and uncertainty, but demonstrated resilience and teamwork. Their efforts culminated in a remarkable achievement, as they emerged champions, successfully defending the title won by SJI in the previous year.
We are proud to share that SJI Team 2 clinched the First Place. This team comprises Tan Qian Ning (ML514), Aguilar Adrien Clark Lim (MN516), Tan Ka Jun Gavriel (ML513), Ashley Ang Shi Qi (Hong Shiqi) (ML512), Patrick Nott Pei De (MN616, Team Leader).
We also commend SJI Team 1 for their invaluable role in preparing alongside their peers through sparring and training. Team 1 was comprised Evangeline Liew (FN503), Fan Enyi (ML511), Gideon Tan (ML611), Jason Yeung (ML615), Ignatius Liong Yao Koon (LE608, Team Leader).
Individually, Evangeline Liew (FN503) was named 4th Best Speaker, while Tan Qian Ning (ML514) was awarded the Best Overall Speaker.
Well done, Josephians! Ora et Labora 💚🤍

As the choppy waters settle on this year’s Canoe NSG, we are immensely proud of the valiant effort displayed by our SJI Canoe Team.
Both our B Division and C Division canoeists rode the tides with grit and determination, finishing with a commendable 3rd Place overall.
This season has shown just how far we have come. Together, we rose above the tides to clinch 4 gold medals in the B Division and 3 gold medals in the C Division - a remarkable leap forward from just 1 gold medal in 2025.
Our A Division athletes also made their mark in the individual races, bringing home an impressive 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal.
Behind every result was unwavering discipline, quiet resilience, and the strength of a team that refused to give up. Every stroke, every race, and every moment on the water reflected the spirit of a true Josephian - resilient, united, and always striving for more.

The SJI Debate Society recently hosted the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Secondary Debating and Oratory Society for a friendly sparring session, which proved to be both engaging and enriching for participants and audience.
Across two rounds, six Josephian debaters faced off with six debaters from CHIJ Sec on a range of thought-provoking motions, including the sustainable development of data centres and China’s interests in the Middle East. Each round was followed by insightful feedback from CHIJ Sec’s coach, Mr Edwin Tham, an SJI alumnus, whose perspectives added depth to the learning experience.
Representing SJI were Jason Yeung (ML615), Francesca Wong (MN620), Gideon Tan (ML611), Annabel Yap (FN505), Bonifacio Gyula (ML512) and Fan Enyi (ML511).
Such opportunities are invaluable in nurturing our students’ passion for debate while fostering camaraderie, mutual respect and a broader sense of community beyond the school. It was also heartening to witness strong student leadership, with Jedidiah and the Executive Committee organising the event with care and purpose.
These authentic learning experiences continue to leave a lasting impact, shaping our Josephians into confident, thoughtful, and engaged communicators.

Under the bright, sunny skies at Bedok Reservoir Park, our annual cross country event brought together our Josephians for a morning full of energy, determination and school spirit.
Cross country is not just about speed or finishing first. It is about the courage to start, to keep going when it gets tough and to finish with a sense of purpose.
The event began with the competitive categories being flagged off first, setting a fast and furious pace. Shortly after, the various cohorts of mass run participants followed, setting the route abuzz with excitement and camaraderie.
Over the 3.6km distance, Josephians gave their best with determination and heart, and demonstrated commendable resilience and perseverance to reach the finish line. The hard work and effort put in by each student in the weeks leading up to the event was highly commendable.
Beyond the runners, the event’s success wouldn't have been possible without the invaluable support of our student volunteers and teacher helpers, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.
As we look ahead to our school’s 175th anniversary in 2027, this year’s run served as a meaningful reminder of our enduring Josephian spirit of community - cheering and lifting each other up every step of the way.
