Mental note to parents even to myself too!

Parenting truth: Our kids’ feelings need support, not solutions. Try this: Next time your child is having a hard time, say, “I hear you”, “That stinks” or “I’m so glad you’re sharing that with me” instead of allowing your fixing / advice / solution voice to take over. I think you’ll be amazed by what happens next.

How to keep everything together as a parent in present modern day: Psych!!!! We can’t. There are too many things. No one has it all together in all arenas of their life. I promise. We have to prioritize and make decisions about where we put our precious energy, which means something(s) inevitably get the shaft. For me I try to remind myself that the most important things to have in order are my relationships with my people and my health and sanity. And if that means that I often leave the house with my shirt on inside out or that I only have time to clean my minivan once every 2 months (and it SHOWS), then so be it. Putting connection over control (or the appearance of control really), means learning to be tolerant of the mess. And not just the kitchen dishes, also the complex feelings and the dueling needs of everyone, and the emotional growth that parenthood demands of us. When I lay on my deathbed at the end of all of this, I can’t imagine I will be wishing I had kept up with the cleaning or the Kardashians or whatever performance thing I could feel pressure about…I’ll be thinking about the people I loved and I want to be able to say “oh I was kinda a sh*tshow throughout my life in many ways, but I did always do my best to put my loved ones at the top of the list, and man o man am I glad I did”. Sending love to all of us as we walk this beautiful and messy path of parenthood.
