You tried so hard to put your baby to sleep for the past 30 minutes only to wake them up as soon as you put them down... Its exhausting, I know!
This might work on newborn babies but as babies mature, so do their vestibular system. They become more aware of their bodies and surroundings - that means putting them down might trigger them to wake up.
By helping baby fall asleep in their own sleep space independently, you can avoid this often frustrating process of putting baby down, baby waking up and you starting over again.
I help families everyday to achieve this and we can decide on what works best for your baby and your family 🎉

This sleep fact sounds counter intuitive! Your child may look like she is not tired yet and has an extra burst of energy before bedtime. But this is because their bodies produce ⚡️extra adrenaline and cortisol ⚡️to stay awake longer when they are overtired. This overtired state 🪫often causes them to fight sleep and wake more overnight.
A baby can be overtired from wake windows being too long for their age, short naps during the day or overall sleep debt from chronic overtiredness.
How to prevent overtiredness?
💭Follow age appropriate wake window during the day
💭Adequate daytime sleep
💭Move bedtime earlier when needed

Has your baby started rolling from their backs to their tummy throughout the night?
This is a ✨new developmental milestone✨ that can cause parents to worry about safe sleep and you may find yourself turning your baby back on their back for the 1000th times a night.
1. Keep baby's arms free. If you are using a swaddle, stop swaddling immediately. You may transition to a sleep sack instead. A baby that is learning to roll from back-to-tummy needs their arms free to help roll back, and/or lift their neck and head sideways for clear and unobstructed breathing whilst face down.
2. Lots of daytime practising the new skills. This means tummy time during play time to help them master this new skill quickly!
3. Once your baby can roll from their back to tummy INDEPENDENTLY, most experts agree that it is safe to leave them in this position.
4. Babies might need some time and comfort to get used to this new sleeping position. If your baby is upset every time they roll to their tummy, you can try to pat or shh baby to help them get comfortable.

Holidays are busy, exciting and baby sleep might not have been the priority. Now that holidays are over, its time to get sleep back on track! 🎊
Here are my top 3 tips to get your sleep routine back on track:
1️⃣Get back to your normal routine – the fastest way to get back on track is to go back to your familiar routine. If you have been travelling from a different time zone, it is also time to adjust back to your home time zone.
2️⃣Focus on bedtime routine - take time to go through the bedtime routine. Slow it down, take a longer bath, an extra song or book to help your little ones settle back into their routines.
3️⃣Prioritise sleep at home - sleep might have not been a priority when you were travelling/ on holidays (I get it, too many things to see, too many things to do) and naps might have been in the stroller or off schedule. Now its time to get back some restorative sleep and the best way is in the crib at home.

🧳 With the festive season coming up, we are hearing excited chatters of travel, staycation or the much anticipated reunion plan with families overseas!
✈️ Here are some practical sleep tips to make sure the entire family is well-rested even when travelling.
⛵️ The key to a smooth sleep is to maintain the day schedule and sleep environment as best as possible. This may mean prioritising your baby’s sleep when you plan your day and bringing all the sleep things familiar to your baby.
🚘 Most importantly, relax and enjoy! You can always get things on track when you get home.

When your newborn baby has been awake for about 1 hour including feeding time, it is time for a nap! 👶🏻💤 It might feel like your baby just woke up but newborns cannot be awake for too long before it is time for another nap.
🔹Why is this important?
Newborns that are awake for too long will be overtired and often struggle to fall asleep.
🔸How to prevent this?
Other than staying within the age appropriate wake window, we want to watch out for EARLY sleepy cues. These are signs that your baby uses to tell you that he/ she is ready for a nap. It will take time to learn your baby's sleepy cues but don't worry, you will get better at recognising the signs!
These early sleepy cues may look like:
🤚🏻Avoiding stimulation
👉🏻Looking away
👀Rubbing their eyes
👂🏻Pulling their ears
Newborns might go from being calm to inconsolable cries in a matter of minutes so it is important to catch them before they get overtired!

Having a great sleeper is important but we also want to make sure we have a safe sleeper. As a sleep consultant, its important for me to advise parents on safe sleep practices according to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). These recommendations are for healthy babies up to 1 year of age.
✔️Always put baby on her back every nap & every night. Babies are allowed to sleep on her tummy IF she rolls there independently.
✔️Place baby to sleep in their own space.
✔️Use a firm and flat mattress.
✔️ A bare crib is best. Avoid pillows, bumpers, blankets and toys.
✔️Stop swaddling once baby can roll over. You can switch to a baby sleep sack/ sleeping bag.
I know that this is a hot topic as every family & culture have their own ways. Ask me questions, do your research and talk to your paediatrician to make the best well-informed decision for your family.
