It was a meaningful opportunity to engage with foreign employees in a supportive and affirming space focused on mental wellbeing and personal empowerment. The session recognised the unique emotional, relational, and practical challenges faced by foreign employees, including work-related stress, separation from family, cultural adjustment, and the need to balance personal wellbeing with caregiving responsibilities.
The talk emphasised the importance of self-care, emotional awareness, and healthy coping strategies. Participants were encouraged to recognise their own strengths, understand common stress responses, and develop practical ways to regulate emotions in daily life. Key themes included managing stress, setting healthy boundaries, seeking support when needed, and nurturing self-worth and resilience despite demanding circumstances. Practical examples and simple techniques were introduced to help participants apply the concepts in their everyday lives, both at work and in their personal time.
Overall, the session aimed to empower participants by validating their experiences, strengthening emotional resilience, and reinforcing the message that their mental health matters. The engagement and openness shown by participants reflected a strong desire for continued learning, support, and wellbeing-focused initiatives within the community.

Psychological Tools for Effective Classroom Management: Beyond Discipline
As educators, we do more than teach subjects—we shape lives. A key part of this journey involves understanding the psychological and emotional needs of our students and responding with empathy, structure, and clarity.
*Understanding Psychosocial Needs by Age Group
Early Childhood (3–6 years): Children crave safety, routine, and connection. At this stage, play, praise, and gentle guidance foster trust and cooperation.
Middle Childhood (7–12 years): A strong need to belong and to feel competent emerges. Recognition, structured responsibility, and group activities build self-esteem.
Adolescence (13–18 years): Teenagers seek identity, autonomy, and peer validation. Open dialogue, respectful boundaries, and emotional safety are key.
*Psychological Tools for the Classroom
Positive reinforcement:
Highlight what’s going right to encourage more of it.
Emotion coaching:
Help students label and regulate their emotions constructively.
Active listening:
Truly hearing a student de-escalates conflict and builds trust.
Restorative practices:
Focus on repairing harm and restoring relationships, not
punishment.
*Discipline Without Corporal Punishment
Discipline isn’t about control—it’s about guidance. Corporal punishment may suppress behavior in the short term, but it erodes trust, emotional safety, and long-term growth. Instead:
* Set clear expectations and consequences.
* Use logical consequences tied to the behavior.
* Offer choices to empower responsibility.
Build a culture of respect where students feel heard and valued.
* When teachers are equipped with the right psychological insights and tools, discipline transforms from punishment to growth. Classrooms become spaces where every child—regardless of age—feels seen, safe, and supported.
Let’s reimagine discipline as a path to connection, not control.

Our recent workshop, conducted for counsellors and social workers in Sri Lanka, focused on psychological tools to empower the less fortunate, focused on the following.
Counselling plays a vital role in empowering individuals and families living in poverty by addressing the psychological, emotional, and social challenges that often accompany economic hardship. Poverty is not only a lack of financial resources but also a condition that can erode self-worth, hope, decision-making ability, and motivation. Through counselling, the poor can develop resilience, gain a sense of control over their lives, and build the confidence to pursue opportunities for change.
Key benefits of counselling for empowering the poor include:
Enhancing Self-Esteem and Identity: Poverty often leads to feelings of shame, inferiority, and hopelessness. Counselling helps individuals rebuild their self-worth and recognize their inherent dignity and potential.
Developing Coping and Problem-Solving Skills: Counselling equips individuals with emotional regulation strategies, communication tools, and practical decision-making skills, enabling them to better navigate life's challenges.
Breaking Cycles of Generational Poverty: By helping individuals recognise and transform limiting beliefs and learned helplessness, counselling can inspire generational shifts in thinking, goal-setting, and behaviour.
Addressing Trauma and Mental Health Needs: Many individuals living in poverty experience trauma, violence, or chronic stress. Counselling provides a safe space to heal and promotes mental wellbeing, which is foundational for empowerment.
Strengthening Social and Family Relationships: Counselling encourages healthier interpersonal dynamics, conflict resolution, and support systems, all of which are critical for stability and growth.
Fostering Hope and Future Orientation: Empowerment through counselling involves helping individuals envision a better future, set goals, and take incremental steps toward economic and social mobility.
Ultimately, counselling acts as a catalyst for inner transformation, enabling the poor to become active participants in their own development and agents of change in their communities.
