Congratulations to all N level Students! You have achieved another milestone and soon you will be moving to the next phase of education. Wherever you will be going , embrace it and enjoy the journey. Education pathway is a marathon ,not a 100m sprint. The success is measured by the completion and not the time taken to complete it. All the best!

Angela is a girl who feels that she is a total failure ; from her appearance, to her result and even relationship with her fellow classmates. She was put to Maths and Chinese foundation end of P5. Her English was borderline and Science result was single digit. Despite that , her mum, who was already struggling hard (Dad was jobless) , refused to give up on her and asked me to carry on helping her.
It was not only an uphill climb but on an extremely steep slope. I asked her if she believed she could do it. She kept quiet and sobbed. I couldn’t push her as she was very sensitive. “ forget about passing and just do what you can. Enjoy the learning journey and I am with you” This was what I told her. No pressure , at her own pace.
When PSLE result was announced, she came in last among my 10 students but guess what?
English - AL6 Science - AL6
Maths - A ( AL6) Chinese - B
She scored AL25 and qualified for G2 (Normal Academic)
Students like Angela are the reason why I am in my 34th year of my teaching. It is not about giving my students lot of assignments to do to score well but getting them to believe they can and keep trying till they reach their goal.
Study is not a 100m dash but a marathon and success is judged by who reach their goal, not who is the first to reach it.
Jia you Angela!

Not every student who scores badly is due to failing to understand the concept or lack of practice. There could be an underlying condition. Recently , i started with a student who scored single digit for maths for her past exam. After numerous lessons to revise , she came back with 2 digits score , still far from passing the paper. For the mcq and open ended questions, her score was borderline, but she almost do nothing for problem sum. When I started to dwell into the reason why she couldn’t do it at all , her reply was “the words are dancing “.
Well , I informed her mum and suggested her to see a specialist

To start with , Angela was not a confident , neither was she academically inclined. There were a lot of challenges in teaching her due to her unwillingness to respond. It took me months to gain her trust to confide in me her personal feelings. We talked often and I would share with her on my perspectives on different issues. She was a victim of school bully too that affected her a lot.
Gradually , she became more open and also started to enjoy to learn. From AL7 , she showed me she has the capability of getting of AL3 (through the latest practice paper) .
That’s where I find the true meaning as an educator ; it is not only to help students to excel academically but to help the students to grow, both in EQ and AQ.

When resources are not given to a child , he becomes the resource

Education is not about chasing paper. Character building is equally important. Heard from a few friends whose children not doing well in O level. They are exploring different options for such as appealing in poly or sending them to private course.
Repeat is not an option to them. Though it could be an option , it doesn’t teach the child to face his failure and pick up from where he has fallen. Don’t worry about it is a disgrace to repeat as success is not about what one can achieve but where he pick himself up and elevate to the next level.
Tough times create strong man
Strong man creates easy time
Easy times create weak man
Weak man creates tough time.
It is part of the learning journey, put aside the pride issue if parents want to raise warriors.

Congratulations to all students who have gotten their results and moving to the next phase.

I taught 4 P6 students this year; one of them is a very challenging case. He started early this year with single digit in P5 final exam. His mother was hoping for a miracle from me but I said I would not know and I could not guarantee result but we could start by believing in the kid that he could do it.
For months , his improvement had been very minimal and his mother was losing hope. I decided to meet the boy. The first question I asked him ,” do you believe in yourself that u can do it ?” He kept quiet. Second question - “But if we are going to work together as a team, do u believe that you can do it?” He nodded his head. Third question - will you be able to commit 100% if I promise to commit myself 100% to help you? He promised.
He honoured his promise and today his mother texted me and told me he got a AL6 for his maths. Horray!
Choosing to believe your child , prepare their willingness and work with them as a team create the kind of miracle you want them to achieve

Look at it closely , is the mask turning rotating from left to right or from right to left?

Dear parents, when you look at your children’s final examination result and it not be up to your expectations, what will you tell them?
1) you knew it they wouldn’t be able to do well
2) you know that it is a matter of time they will make it

Trust me, whatever you tell the children, it will become true. Just like whether you say mask is rotating from left from right or from right to left, you are right.

As the saying goes, go for the heart and the mind will follow. The first and foremost thing you need to do is to build the faith in them and get them to believe in themselves they can before you put them in any enrichment program to help them improve.
