So these are the statements that I have heard or read that makes me go hmmm.. π€
- using 'said' is dead
- 'said' is boring
- if you use other verbs such as 'exclaimed' or 'retorted' instead of 'said', you will get more marks
The above statements are far from the truth!
This strategy cannot be taken in isolation. Peppering a story with one or two fancy words (retorted, exclaimed or other alternatives to replace 'said') is not going to magically make a story interesting.
I'm not saying these alternatives should be avoided. They are great but 'said' is great too.
'said' is especially great with the use of subtext.
With intentional examples and practice, your child can definitely incorporate this into the next story. Try this and let me know how it goes!

Thinking about Hari Raya always brings back some wonderful memories of childhood and spending it with my Muslim neighbours.
You know me and how I always love reading a script with cultural references.
There's a lot to learn from each other's cultures and a great place to start is to encourage our kids to pen down their experiences after festive celebrations.
Wishing all my Muslim friends a Selamat Hari Raya!π

And just like that, we are now in the year of the Dragon!
Who says that stories cannot consist of cultural experiences?
In fact, if children know how to use these descriptive phrases, they make the most authentic and heartfelt stories.
A great way to start is to pepper your daily conversations with such phrases.
With cultural descriptions, experiences matter and immersing ourselves with good literature matter.
What are you reading today today to help your child with figurative language?

Ever wonder why some stories feel flat and don't evoke much feelings in you as much as some others?
A lot of it lies with how the character's feelings are written!
For beginning writers, 'He was angry' is good enough.
But.
Taking this to the next level would be dissecting this into Face-Body-Voice sentences:
Flared nostrils (Face)
Clenched fists (Body)
Resentment underlining every word that came out of his mouth (Voice)
Have you come across such phrases in the picture books you've read with your child ? I'm curious. Let me know!

There's no running away from writing about feelings in a narrative. Character's feelings drive the plot forward, thickens the plot, and sometimes even create the problem!
Instead of the good ole 'She was ________(insert basic feeling)'.
Make the reader curious. Use the Face-Body-Voice sentences to create Show-don't-tell.
The best part is kids already know this. They just need exposure to the fancy vocabulary to describe the feeling.

The flow of ideas from sentence to sentence to paragraphs to a whole story cannot be emphasized enough.
'After that' and 'then' in a story are fine. It is a child's natural way of linking events in a story.
But.
School-based writing demands a little more, and writing conventions are different from spoken language.
Teach your child this and let me know how it goes!

Now, JK Rowling wouldn't mind this at all even if she read this. The lady has built a legacy. As we speak about how to help our children, she is probably having some tea and scones in one of her mansions. π
In all seriousness, what are your thoughts on this ?
PS: The new term begins from December 2022. We now have classes for K2 - Primary 6 children. We also have a new centre opening in Tampines and new time slots! Click on the link in the bio to find out more.
