From a student who is studying Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, and on the path to taking the International Baccalaureate exam. In the IB exam, 7 is the highest score. Yes, I always encourage all students to work towards the As and 7s but nothing is more precious than intellectual curiosity.

Swipe to see my answer to the student’s question. Truth is, we can never be sure of authorial intent. Once written, published, disseminated, the text circulates as part of the public economy of meaning-making. The author is dead, said Roland Barthes. And indeed, they might well be, or not. Again, we can’t be sure. The only thing we have is our own meaning-making, that is to say in the simplest manner possible — the only thing we know is the effect of the text on us, the reader or in this case the audience.

Have you read Death of a Salesman? What do you think of the American Dream? What has that done for America today? How does it drive Trump and the US-Iran war? 🇺🇸⬇️

Les Misérables! There are at least 3 pairs of character foils in the musical (more in Hugo’s novel) — guess who? Leave a comment! ⬇️

Congratulations on the 90RP, H3 Distinction and Oxford offer! You deserve everything you’ve worked for. You’re one of the most thinking students I’ve ever taught. Everything I teach you, you continue to think about it on your own, and when you speak with me again, you have new insights. I will miss these discussions. And you know, you will miss studying Literature, even as you continue to take flight and soar to new heights. I cannot wait to see your journey. I’m so proud of you ❤️

A-LEVEL 2025 H2 Literature Results (RI student) 🅰️✨

Congratulations on the 90RP! So remarkably intelligent that you managed this in 3 months! From U to A — your progress is incredible and I’m very proud of you. But what perhaps touched me the most was that after the A-Level, you read Albert Camus on your own 🥹 Dream big and chase every dream because you can achieve anything ❤️
