ILS has accepted an invitation to join the World Health Organization Global Alliance for Drowning Prevention, with President Graham Ford AO representing ILS in this important forum.

This announcement comes as we confirm that the 2027 World Conference on Drowning Prevention will be held in Rome, Italy 🇮🇹

🌊 Floods affect communities around the world year after year, with developing countries facing the highest exposure. Nearly 2 million people live in flood-prone coastal zones, where losses cascade far beyond the flood itself.

Several hazards drive flood risk:
• 🌧️ Intense rainfall and storms
• 🌀 Cyclones
• 🪨 Ground instability and subsidence
• 🏗️ Infrastructure failure, such as dams

Floods have cascading impacts, increasing risks of other hazards:
• 🏚️ Landslides, erosion and damaged infrastructure
• 🚱 Water contamination and disease outbreaks
• 🚦 Disrupted transport and livelihoods

Flood risks can be managed through:
• 🏗️ Risk-informed urban planning
• 🌅 Maintaining healthy rivers, wetlands and coasts
• 📢 Strong building codes and early warnings
• 🤝 Inclusive evacuation, finance and insurance
