Why Do Kids Struggle with Independence?
We all want our children to grow into confident, independent individuals—but getting there isn’t always as simple as it seems.
Lydia Lim, our Chief Psychologist, shares key insights on why independence isn't always what it seems:
💡 Myth #1: ""My child never asks for help, so they must be independent.""
🔍 Reality: While this signals independence at first glance, it does not mean that she's 'on top of everything'. In fact, this 'perceived independence' could be due to the child's reserved nature - in order to keep to herself, she's motivated to 'stay out of trouble'. This comfort in isolation and ability to 'stay under the radar' may unwittingly camouflage deeper needs and concerns that she struggles to understand on her own and thus, finds it difficult to voice out.
💡 Myth #2: ""My child is so needy—I need to push them towards independence.""
🔍 Reality: Contrary to this, research has shown that the more children experience an abundance of affection, safety and secure attachment with parents, the greater their readiness for independent thinking and functioning.
It is vital for us to take time to understand our children and their unique needs, rather than focus on superficial signs of independence. This will help us effectively support them in their journeys to healthy independence!

Why do kids need reminders for routines they agreed to? 🤔
It can be frustrating when your child forgets a routine you both set together—but the truth is, remembering and following through takes time! Lydia Lim, our chief psychologist, explains why reminders are actually a crucial part of your child’s development:
💡 ""From early childhood to teenage and adult years, children are still growing in their ability to process and recall the information they receive daily. Just like us, they remember things more easily when they resonate with them or hold personal meaning. That’s why understanding your child’s unique rhythms, personality, and daily energy levels can help routines stick and reduce resistance.""
✨ What helps?
✔️ Observe their biological rhythms—when they’re naturally more focused or tired.
✔️ Tune into their personality-driven inclinations—do they prefer structure or flexibility?
✔️ Notice what energises or overwhelms them—some routines may need adjusting.
If your child struggles with routines, it might not be defiance—it may be time to evolve and co-create new ones together.
