Hello! I would like to make use of this platform to share my experience both as a tutor and as a student.

Since young, when it comes to learning, I am definitely not the fastest kid around. In fact, I take time to learn, understand and practice the concepts for the various subjects. There was a period of time where I believed that memory work was the way to go! I told myself to memorise every single thing and I will do well in my examinations. Truth to be told, I did not manage to do well in my examination with pure memory work! As I grow older, I start to believe in ‘Studying Smart’ instead of ‘Studying Hard’.

Some common questions! ‘How to STUDY SMART?’ ‘How to retain the depth of knowledge and info?’ Learning Retention Strategies are very important. My first sharing will be on the iMPROVE Learning Strategies as follows:

P - Primacy & Recency

V - Visual Imagery
E - Elaboration

“To be the best student, you need to be the best teacher”

My NTU Professor shared this perspective with me which completely changed my outlook towards teaching, tuition, and most importantly EDUCATION. To me, education is about care and concern, where you want your peers to be as good as you or even better. That alone, is the true meaning of education.

I did not start off with that perspective as a tutor. 10 years ago, all I wanted was to earn extra pocket money to be self-sufficient. Through my tutoring career, my perspective changed drastically. I start to see the impact that I could make in students’ lives, the positivity and energy that I could inject in my lessons. Teaching became a two-way learning as I continue to learn from my students. These experiences moulded my mindset and determination in inspiring more students to become better versions of themselves.

After changing my teaching approach, I started to see my students’ grades improving in leaps and bounds. In fact, this journey is more than just “GRADES”. Students told me that they will try to make me proud and thanked me for changing their perspectives towards education and life. I even had a student that ended up taking the subject she hated the most in Polytechnic.
