A recent excursion to Kratie, Cambodia, afforded me the opportunity to unwind in a picturesque stream, surrounded by nature's splendor. The river's flow was a balm to my senses, inducing a state of deep relaxation and tranquility. As the water's buoyancy supported my body, I felt my anxieties and stress dissipate, replaced by a sense of rejuvenation and a deeper appreciation for the essential role water plays in our existence, a fundamental element crucial to our very survival as we age into our golden years.

Why is growing old a privilege? Growing old is considered a privilege because it signifies that a person has lived through the many challenges of life and accumulated experiences, wisdom, and memories. Many people face untimely death due to illness, accidents, or other circumstances, so reaching old age means one has been granted more time to enjoy life, relationships, and personal growth. Additionally, ageing offers opportunities for reflection, contribution to society, and deeper connections with others, which are valuable aspects of the human experience. So let us enjoy living in our golden years if we have been successful in adding healthy years to life. Even if we are not as healthy as we would like to be, learn to be HAPPY in life as happiness is key to longetivity and purposeful living.

Ikigai, the Japanese philosophy that supports longevity, features 'Connect to nature' as a key principle among its 10 rules. This concept involves developing a relationship with nature, promoting mindfulness, appreciation, and grounding. The relevance of this principle to longevity is multifaceted:
STRESS REDUCTION: Exposure to nature reduces cortisol levels, promoting relaxation and lowering chronic stress, a significant disease risk factor.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Engaging with nature often involves physical activities like walking or gardening, enhancing cardiovascular health and fitness.
EMOTIONAL BALANCE: Nature exposure improves mood, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, and enhances psychological well-being.
SENSE OF BELONGING: Connecting with nature fosters a sense of being part of something larger, contributing to purpose, a core aspect of Ikigai.
Together, these benefits support a balanced, healthier, and longer life.

My visit to Krouch Chmar, Phum Trea and Stueng Trang in Cambodia on 29 May 2026 with my wife and some Cambodian friends was not only for the purpose of doing Qurban (sacrifice of cows) activities but more importantly to strengthen bonding among friends, enhance social interaction, enjoy local food and make new friends whilst doing good (donation for charitable causes) to the community. It is an important aspect of the PHWR framework of Ageing Gracefully. P (Purpose) reminds us of the importance of knowing our reason for living, H (Health) focuses on the need for adding healthy years to life through preventive healthcare, W (Wealth) is about living in dignity (debt-free) and ensuring financial independence at old age and R (Relationship) emphasises the importance of cultivating supportive network and continuous engagement with friends and community in our golden years.

Upon celebrating three years since becoming a Datuk (grandfather) at 67, with my first grandchild's arrival, I am filled with gratitude. Alhamdulillah. My heartfelt congratulations to my eldest son and daughter-in-law for gifting me and my wife this new chapter. The significance of being a grandfather or grandmother is multifaceted. It occupies a unique space between past and future, embodying continuity and linking generations through wisdom, values, and stories, while fostering future potential. This role transforms one's identity from an individual or parent to a legacy guardian and unconditional love provider. It invites introspection on life's cyclical nature, human mortality, and intergenerational connections. Being a grandparent embodies an ethical duty to care beyond personal interests and cultivate virtues like patience and empathy. It requires humility in acknowledging the limits of influence and embracing life's mystery as it unfolds. Ultimately, grandparenthood offers a distinct perspective on human interconnectedness and the responsibility to nurture it.
