To be honest, most parents probably don’t think Situational Writing needs its own workshop.

After all… it’s only 14 marks.

Compared to Composition or Comprehension, it feels small. Manageable. Something children can “just pick up along the way”.

To be fair, many students do manage reasonably well without extra help.

Here’s the interesting thing...

Situational Writing is actually one of the few components in the English paper where students can not only improve very quickly once they understand the hidden mechanics behind it but also score full marks! The marks are often not lost because of weak English but because children do not fully understand tone, purpose, audience and format.

Once those pieces click into place, the jump can be surprisingly fast.

At The Creative Writing Troupe, we teach Situational Writing through our signature Play-Write Method — an approach that blends drama tools, guided play, discussion and writing instruction. Before students write, they first learn to step into the situation itself.

Who are they speaking to?
What is the relationship?
What does the reader need to feel?
Why does this format exist in the first place?

Instead of memorising templates blindly, students begin understanding the logic behind the writing. When children understand the “why”, their confidence changes completely.

One of our students recently scored 13/14 for her Situational Writing weighted assessment. The joy she felt over that result was honestly such a lovely thing to witness. ☺️

This June Holiday, I’ll be conducting:

The Essentials of Situational Writing
Dates: 22 & 24 June 2026
Time: 5 – 7pm
Venue: Zoom
Fee: $150
Who is it for? Suitable for P5 & P6 students

Formats covered:
• Email
• Article
• Diary
• Letter

The workshop includes guided demonstrations, interactive discussion, role play elements and timed writing practices designed to help students think with greater clarity and flexibility during exams.

- Taught personally by me, Ms Zara
- Drama trained educator
- Pedagogically trained (NAC-NIE)
- 18 years of teaching experience in English and Drama

As the workshop is conducted in a small-group setting (max. 8 students) to allow for interaction and personalised guidance, confirmation of the programme will begin once the minimum group size is reached. Parents who are keen may wish to register early so we can confirm the workshop arrangements smoothly.

If this sounds like something your child might enjoy exploring this June holidays, feel free to comment “SW” or send us a PM for more details.

Recently, a parent shared something that stayed with me.

“She actually speaks a lot at home but the moment she faces an examiner, everything disappears.”

She wasn't the only parent concerned for her child. Another mentioned:

“I don’t even know what Oral preparation is supposed to look like anymore.”

Truthfully, I understood their uncertainty.

2025 was the very first year students sat for the revised PSLE English Oral format — a format that shifted quite significantly from the old style many parents were familiar with.

The Oral component now carries a heavier weightage:
⭐ increased from 15% to 20% of the overall English grade
⭐ increased from 30 marks to 40 marks

Perhaps more importantly, the exam itself now focuses far more on:
⭐ higher-level thinking
⭐ emotional inference
⭐ authentic communication
⭐ spontaneity
⭐ expressing opinions naturally and thoughtfully

Instead of relying heavily on observation and memorised scripts, students are now expected to:

• interpret emotions from real-life photographs
• sustain meaningful conversations
• elaborate on personal opinions and experiences
• adapt tone according to purpose, audience and context
• speak naturally and confidently under pressure

As I researched the revised syllabus and studied the new expectations more deeply, one thing became increasingly clear to me:

Children do not simply need “good answers” anymore.

They need support in learning how to think, organise and express themselves naturally in real-time conversations.

This was what inspired me to create the PSLE Oral Exam Mastery Workshop — a small-group workshop that combines language development with drama-based speaking techniques in a warm and encouraging environment.

A little about myself:

✨ MOE-registered educator
✨ Trained in pedagogy
✨ 18 years of teaching experience
✨ Experienced in supporting children with SEN
✨ Degrees in both English Literature and Musical Theatre

My teaching style combines language development, creativity and performance-based speaking techniques to help children become more confident and expressive communicators. ☺️

While my background in English Literature allows me to guide students in organising and expressing ideas clearly and effectively, my training in drama and musical theatre helps students work on:

⭐ confidence
⭐ spontaneity
⭐ vocal delivery
⭐ expression
⭐ enunciation
⭐ audience awareness

The aim is not to make children sound rehearsed, but to help them become thoughtful, adaptable and confident speakers.

Our previous Oral Mastery intake filled up very quickly and parents shared that they appreciated the balance between practical exam preparation and genuine communication skills.

As such, we are considering opening a June Holiday PSLE Oral Exam Mastery Workshop.

Dates: 22nd – 26th June
Time: 2pm – 4pm daily
Venue: Conducted via Zoom
Details: Minimum 3 students; Maximum 8 students
Fee: $270 ($250 for the first 3 parents to comment and confirm!)

Throughout the 5-day workshop, students will:

⭐ Engage in drama-based games and activities that build:
• spontaneity
• confidence
• vocal projection
• expression
• enunciation

⭐ Explore popular PSLE Oral topics

⭐ Practise responding to emotion-based and opinion-based questions more confidently

⭐ Build flexible response structures in conjunction with the skills they learnt in school

⭐ Receive guided vocabulary banks, sentence starters and speaking scaffolds to support their responses

⭐ Practise organising ideas quickly under timed conditions (Every lesson, each student gets 1:1 time with me)

⭐ Learn how to express opinions more clearly, naturally and persuasively

⭐ Create their own personalised point-form oral notes during lessons that they can revise from closer to the examination period

Express your interest by 22 May 2026 and please comment "Keen OEM" below or drop us a message so we can gauge interest before confirming the workshop. Once confirmed, we'll be in touch by PM. Looking forward to meeting more young speakers this June!

Next year might be your child's PSLE year... but here’s the truth: your child doesn’t actually have a full year.

By the time the term picks up speed, mid-years and Prelims roll in fast, and before you know it… the PSLE is right there in September.

That means less time, more pressure and far fewer chances to fix the gaps.

That’s why we don’t wait till next year. We start now.
This December, let’s get your child ready before the race begins. In the PSLE Preparation Intensive Workshop, I’ll guide your child through the toughest components of the English paper with clear, proven strategies that work. No fluff, no panic.

Here’s what we’ll cover in depth:
✅ Situational Writing (new syllabus update!)
No more copy-and-paste. Students must now craft creative, purposeful responses that fit the context and tone. I’ll teach them how to think on their feet and write with flair and precision (specially developed with Drama tools!)

✅ Continuous Writing
The weighting for Continuous Writing may have lowered, but the expectations haven’t. Marks are often lost when students fail to develop their ideas fully or drift away from the topic. We’ll tackle ways to stay focused on the topic, use strategic vocabulary that brings a story to life (rather than clutters it) and develop smart methods to study for the exam.

✅ Oral Examination (the first hurdle!)
It’s the first paper and often the most nerve-racking one. Many students struggle with the Stimulus-Based Conversation, worrying they will run out of ideas. As a trained performer, I understand what stage nerves feel like and how to turn them into confidence. Through improvisation and performance-based speaking exercises, I’ll help your child stay composed and organise their thoughts quickly. We’ll also work on a method to help students develop their own unique scripts so their answers stand out for their originality and natural flow.

✅ Synthesis & Transformation
A quiet mark-eater. Each question is worth 2 marks and five of them means a potential 10-mark swing. I’ll share the key formulas and help your child master the questions that students often find tricky.

✅ Comprehension Cloze
A challenge even for strong students. We’ll drill on collocations, grammar logic and contextual clues so that filling in blanks becomes a strategic process, not a guessing game.

✅ Comprehension Open-Ended
So many students understand the passage but miss what examiners want. I’ll train them to read between the lines, piece evidence together and write complete, examiner-friendly answers.

Now, parents might ask, "Will this really help my child?”
The short answer? Yes, when they learn with the right methods. Take for instance, Celine and Elena's outstanding performances in their exams this past year.

✨ Celine (P5) scored 35/36 in her recent year-end English Composition exam using the methods and tools I taught her in class.
✨ Elena (P5) used to score 21 - 24 out of 36 but in her EYE 2025, she managed to score 31/36.

Before I forget, here's a little introduction...
I’m Ms Zara, co-founder of The Creative Writing Troupe, an MOE-registered educator who’s taught English and Literature since 2008. I have a double degree in English Literature and Musical Theatre, and I’m also certified to teach students with special needs, after working with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore. Through my Play-Write Method (a drama-based learning approach I created) my students stay engaged, confident and expressive while mastering the skills that matter most.

Your child won’t just learn what to write but they’ll also learn how to think, plan and perform under exam pressure.
Let’s make the most of December!

By January, many students will still be warming up.
By then, your child will already be moving forward! Prepared, confident ... and ahead of the curve. ✨

Start early, so PSLE doesn’t feel like a sprint, but a strong, steady finish.

Here's some good news! When you sign up for both workshops, you can stand to save a whopping $70! Also, sign up together with a friend and both of you can enjoy $15 off the entire purchase.

Send us a Facebook Message to secure your child’s spot and give them the best gift this December: a confident start to their PSLE year. Slots are limited to 8 students per workshop for focused attention.

This is a true story about a boy named Jude. Jude, a P4 student of mine, has a wry sense of humour. His remarks often send the class into fits of laughter, mostly because his delivery is always so deadpan. Comedians should learn from this boy!

Anyway, with that said, he's usually quiet and observant in class, careful not to be too disruptive and always respectful. Basically, just an all-round pleasure to teach. Jude is also one of the most diligent students I have ever met. That’s why it came as such a shock when we learned he’d scored 8/20 for his Term 2 Composition exam. (Don't worry, this story has a happy ending!)

Upon investigating, we found out that his Content marks took a hit when he hadn't expanded upon the topic sufficiently. His Language marks were also affected by numerous punctuation and spelling mistakes.

I have to pause here to say how grateful I was for the faith Jude’s mummy placed in me. Jude's been with me since Term 1 2024 and it must have been quite a shock for her to receive this result. I'm always so grateful when parents believe in what I do because that's what's kept me going as a teacher these past 17 years. 🙏

I had a chat with her, as I usually do at our Termly Parent-Teacher update, and we set about creating a game plan for Jude. Every week, Jude would pour in lots of effort to complete his corrections, even re-doing his corrections if I spotted further mistakes in those! He also very wisely used the techniques we introduced in class: Mentioning the Topic 3 times, Question Hook, Emotive Phrases, Thematic Phrases, Proper Speech Punctuation... just to name a few!

What impressed me the most about his EYE composition was that he was able to identify how his examiners had been ruthless with the punctuation in his speeches for his previous paper. So, he recalibrated. Rather than completely removing all speeches, which would affect the storytelling, he drilled himself on how to write proper speech punctuation and only used dialogue when it was absolutely vital to the story.

This EYE 2025, from an 8/20, Jude managed to score 16/20. That's an 8 mark jump! 🥹😭

If there’s one lesson to take away, it’s that failure really can be the first step to success. Jude was also successful because he never forgot to do his corrections, not even for a week. Jude proved that consistency, reflection and persistence make all the difference.

There are many more students with success stories like his! Let me know in the comments if you’d like to hear more - I’d love to share them.
