Golf Article for Orchid Country Club! Fresh!

Welcome to part 2 of the series "5 Common Faults". Today we shall be looking at the release of the golf club through and after impact.

The word "release" is very common in golf, but I'd like you to take some time to think of what the word release really means.

Release
/rɪˈliːs/

Verb - allow (something) to move, act, or flow freely.

Noun - the action or process of releasing or being released

When we talk about the release in golf, we usually refer to it as a noun. I believe it would do many of us good to start thinking more about what the Verb means, and how we can better go about executing it.

When we release something, especially when it comes to propelling an object, very often it tends to move away from us freely. If we were to pull something from one side of our body to the other, that would feel less of a release than if it were to move away from our center. However, I see a lot of golfers do exactly that, stopping the body rotation at the ball, then tugging the club across their chest, resulting in a huge loss of power and consistency. What we need to work on is for the body to turn past the ball so that the club and arms can the extend away from us, allowing the club to truly release.

Hopefully the pictures in the post can help you visualize in which way we apply our forces to allow for a better release.

At the end is a video of the half swing drill, do give it a try and see if it allows you to release better. As you try this, you should find it takes a lot of tension off your back and shoulders, and with enough practice it should help you strike it better and gain a bit of distance!

If you find that you're slicing the ball while working on this, don't worry because the next post will work really well with this one to rectify the slice!

Till then, happy golfing! .

Greetings! Today I would like to talk about something really simple, highly important, and yet repeatedly misunderstood and/or overlooked: the Grip.

This is usually the first thing I look out for in any lesson, as it has an extremely large impact on how you return the club to the ball at impact as well as the kind of release you'll need to have in your swing. Having a good grip can allow your swing to be more efficient, by reducing the need to steer the club into an acceptable impact position, resulting in more consistency and distance

Left Hand Grip

1. Club should be held closer to the fingers than the palms to allow for maximum efficiency in energy transfer.
2. Hypothenar Eminence (the pad of flesh near your wrist, opposite the thumb) should be on top of the grip.
3. From the golfer's view, 2 knuckles should be visible. Too many knuckles showing creates a tendency for the ball to go left. Too little knuckles showing will tend to cause the ball to go right.
I notice a lot of people, when trying to achieve point 2, end up getting point 3 wrong. Having your wrist over the Grip should not cause more than 2 knuckles to be visible.

Right Hand Grip

1. Place grip along fingers, not palm.
2. Palm should face the target, not upwards or downwards. It should feel like you're shaking hands with a little kid.

For those of you that struggle with a slice, checking and correcting your grip should either fix it immediately, or allow you to rectify it more easily in future, when we cover the other common faults. For those of you that hook the ball, it's worth checking and correcting the Grip, but you will find the next few topics we cover may have a more immediate impact in improving your ball flight.

Either ways, stay tuned for more, and happy golfing meanwhile!

Hi everyone, and welcome to my first series of golf tips!

In this series I will identify 5 of the more, if not most, common problems I see in golfers that I teach, and over the next few posts I will provide my insights on how we go about correcting these problems.Hopefully this will be of help to you in some way or another.

Happy golfing meanwhile!

Hello! My name is Ian, and I am a golf professional. I've had the luxury to pick the sport up 25 years ago, and spent the last 10 years teaching all the intricacies of this amazing game.

As an instructor, my mission is twofold: to help individuals find improvement, and in doing so, to help them find more enjoyment and success in whatever they set out to achieve.

Nothing excites me more that seeing growth in a student. Golf is so much more than just physical improvement. It is a given that we all want to hit the ball further and straighter, but I believe the most valuable lessons that this journey called golf has to offer are in the areas of character building, self esteem, mental resilience, strategic thinking and risk assessment, to name a few. These are all extremely important traits and skills needed to find success in not just Golf alone, but largely in other sports and, ultimately, in Life as well.

So whatever your purpose may be, whether it be checking off another line on the bucket list, business or social networking, picking up a new skill with friends or loved ones, or even corporate day clinics and events, don't hesitate to contact me either via email, phone or DM if you are interested finding out more! I'd be glad to help you get started on this wonderful journey of learning!
