🎶💚 It’s Children’s Mental Health Week! Let’s talk about how music learning can be a powerful boost for your child’s well-being.
Did you know that just 90 minutes of music lessons a week can improve mental health? Studies show that music:
🎵 Lowers stress by reducing cortisol.
🎵 Boosts dopamine, the “feel-good” hormone.
🎵 Strengthens the brain for better emotional balance.
Music isn’t just about learning songs—it helps your child manage emotions and build resilience. As music teachers, we’re guiding them towards a healthier, more balanced life. 💪✨

It’s never too late to learn an instrument! 🎹
Few adults play musical instruments, and even fewer do so in a group, Caroline Mimbs Nyce wrote in December. What health benefits might they be giving up? https://theatln.tc/oglkQfzJ
“Kids receive plenty of music education, but as people get older, they fall out of practice. Many stop picking up their instrument,” Nyce writes. “This is unfortunate, in part because plenty of research shows that adults could benefit from playing music.”
Playing music helps build larger brain networks and new pathways. “Musicians tend to have better attention than nonmusicians,” Nyce continues. “Banging on a drum or tooting a horn can also relieve stress, reduce burnout, and help with anxiety and depression. For older people specifically, research has shown potential cognitive benefits along with a possible decrease in dementia risk.”
Adults may be skipping out in part because music education is associated with childhood and coursework. And after people grow out of music education in their childhood, they tend to think that music is a special talent, Nyce writes, not something that just anybody can learn.
“Of course, people are busy; they simply may not have the luxury of sitting down to study Bach once a week, much less the money to pay for an instrument or private lessons,” Nyce writes.
Playing music in groups has additional benefits, such as allowing adults to feel more trusting of and connected to one another, and to the world in general. But while it’s easy to go to a park or gym and pull together a game of pickup basketball, “piecing together people at the same skill level to play a concerto or even just jam in a garage is another matter.”
Nyce herself recently began to play the recorder. “I plan to keep learning,” she writes, “not because it strengthens my neuropathways per se (though I certainly don’t mind that), but because making music, even when it’s silly—perhaps especially when it’s silly—is just a whole lot of fun.” https://theatln.tc/oglkQfzJ

Glenn Gould on the magic and mystery of the piano... 🎹

Having just completed the book "Atomic Habits,"📖which has garnered widespread popularity since its release, I've discovered several invaluable tips that I believe could greatly benefit piano students, particularly in the daily practice routines and in maintaining consistency.
1️⃣ Make it Obvious: Create a specific practice schedule and designate a consistent time and place for your piano sessions. Make it obvious by setting up your practice space with everything you need, such as sheet music, a metronome, and a comfortable chair.
2️⃣ Start Small: Break down your practice goals into smaller, manageable tasks that can be accomplished in a short amount of time. Instead of committing to hours of practice each day, start small by setting a goal to practice for just 10-15 minutes daily.
3️⃣ Build Habit Stacks: Pair your piano practice habit with an existing habit or routine to create a habit stack. For example, you could link your piano practice to your night routine by practicing right before you go to bed or before starting your homework in the afternoon. Stack it up with your current habit that you are already doing it on daily basis.
4️⃣ Use Temptation Bundling: Combine your piano practice with a pleasurable activity to make it more enjoyable and rewarding. For instance, you could listen to your favorite music or enjoy a tasty treat while practicing piano. By pairing piano practice with something you look forward to, you'll be more motivated to stay consistent!
5️⃣ Track Your Progress: Use a practice journal or habit tracker to record the time you spend practicing each day, along with any achievements you experience. Seeing your progress visually can reinforce your commitment to consistency and inspire you to continue practicing regularly.

🎹 Enhance Your Piano Practice Efficiency with These 5 Time-Saving Tips! 🕒🎶
1️⃣ Set Clear Goals: Define specific objectives for each practice session, such as mastering a particular piece, improving technique, or learning new scales. Clear goals help you stay focused and make the most of your practice time. Goals can be as small as mastering few bars / one line depend on your teacher’s advice.
2️⃣ Break It Down 🔨: Divide your practice sessions into smaller, manageable segments focused on different aspects of playing, such as scales, chords, and repertoire. This approach prevents overwhelm and allows for targeted improvement 🎯
3️⃣ Focus on Problem Areas: Identify challenging passages or techniques in your music and prioritize practicing them first. By tackling difficult sections early on, you can make significant progress and build confidence more efficiently.
4️⃣ Use Smart Repetition: Mindless repetition is the biggest enemy ⛔️👎 Practice with intention by focusing on specific areas that need improvement. Use techniques like slow practice (I know it’s very tempting to play it fast!!), rhythmic variation, and isolation to target weaknesses effectively.
5️⃣ Practice Regularly: Consistency is key to progress. Schedule regular practice sessions throughout the week, even if they're short. Short, focused practice sessions are often more effective than longer, less focused ones.
With these time-saving tips, you can make the most of your piano practice sessions and achieve your musical goals more efficiently! Practising piano is just like battling through levels in a game, where overcoming a challenge is like leveling up and progressing to the next stage! 👾🎹✨

I don’t play music because I think I’m great at it; I play because I think music is great and I want to be part of it.

Tips of practising away from piano
1. "Air Piano": Encourage your kids to visualize and practice playing their pieces in the air. They can focus on fingerings, hand positions, and movements without needing a piano. This helps reinforce muscle memory and mental practice. 💨🎹
2. "Rhythm Clapping": Teach rhythmic patterns from their pieces and have them practice clapping the rhythms. This helps improve their sense of timing and rhythm, which is essential for playing piano. 🥁
3. "Listening and Mental Practice": Encourage students to listen to recordings of their pieces and mentally practice playing along. This helps with memorization, interpretation, and internalizing the music away from the piano. p/s : consult your teacher if you are looking for recording for the pieces that your kid is practising! 🎧
4. "Finger Exercises": Demonstrate simple finger exercises that can be done anywhere, such as tapping fingers on a table. These exercises help strengthen fingers and improve dexterity, which are essential for piano playing. 👐🎹
5. "Music Theory Games": Introduce fun music theory games or apps that your kids can play on their phones or tablets. (Remember to watch out for their screen time😎)These games can help reinforce note reading, rhythm recognition, and other music theory concepts while on the go 👾🎶 P/s: Ask your teacher for games recommendation! 👩🏻🏫🫢
