Are you practicing... or just playing?
Many piano students fall into the habit of playing a piece from beginning to end, over and over, and calling it practice. But simply playing through a piece isn't the same as practicing it!
What does REAL PRACTICE look like?
1. Identify the Bumpy Spots: Pay attention to where you slow down, hesitate while reading notes, or stumble.
2. Isolate & Dissect: Pull those specific sections out and work on them independently.
3. The 5-Time Rule: Focus on the difficult bar or passage and aim to play it 5 consecutive times, without mistakes or hesitation before moving on.
Next time you sit down at the piano, don't just ask yourself, "How many times should I play this?”
Instead, ask: “What am I trying to improve today?”
Quality practice over quantity, always.
