The first time I heard Reggie play this instrument it was as if I was transported to an Ancient Indian civilization. The sound is hypnotizing as if drawing you into a mesmerizing new world.

Reggie later explained to me, “The Bansuri is a typical North Indian flute played in the Hindustani music tradition. The Veenu is a typical South Indian flute played in the Carnatic music tradition. The flute that I'm playing is a hybrid of both design and aesthetics but has a totally different musical scale and key. It was handed down to me by my paternal grandfather who was from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and its origins come from Buddhist musical tradition. This flute is more than 120 years old”.

I am nature. I am rhythm.
Rhythm is universal like your heartbeat.
I sing with nature through the voice of the yidaki.
The sound stimulates your soul to reach deep into the earth, searching for your initial existence - dust to dust, ashes to ashes.
An immersion into your own breath and self.

(Reggie Perera)

He sits with his legs open upon a broken tree trunk, his shoulders slightly hunched forward whilst balancing his yidaki with his left hand. He does not notice me at first, but I watch admirably as his cheeks pump continuously into the instrument, his shoulders rising and quivering, the action of the circular breathing creating the oscillating rhythm. I can feel the multi-layered droning tones coming through his body and his eyes, darting around the umbrella canopy, suggest he is in a trance state. It is as if he is communicating through his didgeridoo and I am listening to a secret grounded language beyond what the mundane can possibly understand.

When we first launched “Sounds of Dreamtime” we gathered a handful of students to share in this remarkable experience. With no prior knowledge of the Indigenous Australian culture, it was incredible to witness how enthralled the children were with both the music and stories. We held this launch on East Coast beach and Reggie did not fail to intrigue the random beach enthusiasts.

From the moment I met Reggie, he always has a story to tell and it is therefore customary that our 1-hour meetups usually extend to 3 or 4 hours. A man of such vast knowledge, not only of the history of Indigenous Australia and the Dreamtime stories but also with an incredible ability to share permitted cultural customs with such conscientious respect.

The Pleiades, also known as the Dreamtime story of The Seven Sisters is one of the most famous of Australian Indigenous folklore. This endless songline makes reference to the Spirits of the Skies that we see as a celestial constellation in the stars.

I was so moved standing in front of this beautiful painting at the National Gallery Singapore. The exhibition: Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia was one of many works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Sound, whether it be through storytelling with music or words can be the basis for inspiring reflection in children. This poetic free verse was penned by a student attending the “Sounds of Dreamtime” workshop. Children interpret so many beautiful things within the stories they hear.

Teaching dot painting to children can be a tremendous learning experience. It all begins with the stories of the Dreamtime which helps children make a connection with the world around them. The dot painting themselves are a cultural way of storytelling and this not only engages children in respectful conversation but it supports their ability to tell their own unique stories through the pointillism technique.

It must be noted that there is a need to honour the Indigenous culture through this art medium. To copy an Indigenous painting is not appropriate nor is it respectful as the story within the painting belongs to the artist and therefore full credit of the work needs to be awarded.
