CVC blending flip chart
This is how children learn to read words, not just name letters ๐ฃ๏ธ
Using a flip chart, we practise CVC blending:
โข say each sound separately (c โ a โ t)
โข blend the sounds together
โข read the whole word (cat!)
CVC blending helps children understand that sounds work together to make words which is a key step from phonics to real reading ๐

Together, โwyโ can make a difference
๐ A space of hope, love & inclusivity; welcoming all
Feed the monster
Time to feed the hungry phonics monster ๐
๐ค
Letters are hidden around the room and we go on a sound hunt!
Each time a letter is found, we then:
โข identify the sound
โข โfeedโ it to the monster
This playful movement-based activity supports memory, attention, and sound recognition. This is achieved all while keeping learning exciting ๐ง
Phonics bingo
Learning phonics can be fun! ๐
In this activity, we must listen carefully to the sound called out, find the matching letter, place a chip, and then say the sound again.
This simple routine builds:
โข listening skills
โข soundโletter connection
โข reinforcement of learning and confidence through repetition
When learning feels like play, children stay engaged and the learning sticks โญ

Books to build reading
The right books make all the difference ๐โจ
Some favourites that support early reading development include:
โข Bob Books โ simple, decodable, confidence-building
โข Oxford Reading Tree โ progressive language & storytelling
โข Dr Seuss โ rhythm, rhyme, and sound play
โข Elephant & Piggie โ humour, repetition, and expressive reading
Choosing books that match a childโs reading stage helps turn learning to read into loving to read โค๏ธ๐

Phonics is a journey not a single step ๐ค
A strong phonics pathway typically moves through sounds such as:
โข Letterโsound correspondence
โข CVC word blending
โข Digraphs & trigraphs (sh, ch, th, ai, eeโฆ)
โข Sight words
โข Magic-e / long vowel patterns
Learning phonics in a clear, structured sequence helps children read with accuracy, fluency, and understanding ๐ฑ

Reading doesnโt start with books or memorisation of words, it starts with sound ๐ถ๐
The early building blocks of reading include:
โข Phonological awareness โ hearing and playing with sounds
โข Letter recognition & phonics โ knowing letters and the sounds they make
โข Sight & common words โ recognising high-frequency words quickly
โข Decoding & blending โ putting sounds together to read words
When these foundations are in place, children gain the confidence to move from sounding out to meaningful reading ๐

When we first began our journey with Little M in 2022, she faced significant challenges in settling into the school environment. With limited speech and difficulty communicating her wants and needs, everyday demands often felt overwhelming, leading to frequent emotional meltdowns and behaviours.
Through shadow support, we worked closely wirh the school and her family to help Little M assimilate into school routines, regulate her emotions, and attend more meaningfully in class. As she grew more comfortable and confident, we gradually introduced 1-to-1 sessions, focusing on building her communication, regulation, and learning readiness.
Little by little, her growth began to shine ๐ From using minimal language, Little M now communicates with fuller simple sentences, expresses herself more clearly, and shows increasing confidence in sharing her thoughts. With guidance, she has learnt to use breathing strategies to support her emotional regulation, navigate challenging moments, and regain calmness. Her learning journey has also flourished from developing early literacy skills to reading and engaging with learning.
Today, Little M continues to grow, learn, and surprise us with her capabilities ๐ You are so capable, Little M, and the possibilities ahead of you are endless!

Not all disabilities are visible and thatโs why movements like โMay I have a seat pleaseโ and the Sunflower Lanyard matter ๐
These initiatives help signal that someone may need a little extra support, patience, or understanding whether due to a medical condition, sensory needs, fatigue, or other invisible challenges. A simple symbol can make public spaces more compassionate and accessible for everyone.
May I have a seat pleaseโ card: Available for free at selected MRT stations. Eligible commuters can apply via SMRT or SBS Transit counters with a doctorโs memo or supporting documentation.
โข Sunflower lanyard movement: Recognised across Changi Airport and many public spaces. Lanyards can be collected free at participating locations in Changi Airport, St Andrewโs Autism Centre, or purchased online (Amazon).
Letโs continue building a community where kindness, awareness, and inclusion are part of everyday life ๐ฑ

When we first met Little S in October 2022, he faced challenges across several areas from sustaining attention and following directions, to flexibility with routines, speech and language development, social interaction, fine motor coordination, and memory recall.
Over time, Little S began to bloom ๐ Heโs gone from struggling to answer WH questions or build sentences, to confidently expressing himself, narrating stories, and engaging meaningfully in conversations. His fine motor skills (tracing, cutting, colouring, and writing) have strengthened remarkably, and his ability to stay focused, adapt to change, and work independently has grown by leaps and bounds.
His hard work and perseverance have helped him achieve his goal of enrolling into Pathlight โ a goal that has now become a reality โค๏ธ
Today, Little S has not only bridged his developmental gaps but continues to thrive and excel in new challenges. We are so proud of how far heโs come and honoured to have been part of his journey.
Hereโs to celebrating every milestone, big and small because every step forward matters โจ
