I came across this article by McKinsey this morning outlining the benefits of looking after the psychological needs of our teams. My takeaways from the report:

· Psychological well-being at work is one of the most critical factors in employees’ decisions to stay or to go.
· Creating meaning for our guest service teams and service brigades in our restaurants and kitchens should be top of mind for every leader.
· “Most people, across all income levels, believe having an interesting job is as important as having a solid income”.
· Taking care of our front-line service teams translates positively to the bottom line in more than one way.
· The best suggestions to make the workplace more psychologically satisfying will undoubtedly come from the staff.
· Team members of all levels have three basic psychological needs –
- Competence (concept of mastery),
- Autonomy (related to control and agency),
- Relatedness (including positive relationships).
Finally, and possibly most importantly, I need to connect to make a difference as a leader. Connect with me, connect with my team, with our guests and the mission we have in hospitality.

Mastering Your Inner Game 💪🏼

As we are approaching the midpoint of 2022, this topic has been on my mind. So, when I came across this article by John Hall, I paid attention.

The ability to master our inner life, our emotions, and thoughts will decide how far we can go in life. (That thought alone is scary and very powerful).

It will set the course for our relationships, career, earning potential and our overall sense of achievement and happiness in life.
Overcoming self-doubt, learning to communicate and growing in confidence is a good place to start for everyone who wants to grow.

The reminder that stood out to me in particular was that we have to work on our craft.

We have to know what we are good at and what skills we need to work on. Regardless of our position and seniority, we have to keep working on our craft.

Find a mentor, or coach, or a group of people that will give you honest feedback, that will help you improve and grow in your craft.

Be intentional about your growth. I know I need to be intentional about my growth. Here are some questions that might get us going:
❓What new skill have I learned in the first 6 month of 2022?
❓Where have I improved?
❓What am I going to learn in the next 6 months?
