7th Oldham Cup 2021

Dear Debaters, Coaches and Team Managers,

We are happy to announce that the 8th Oldham Cup 2022 will be opening registration soon! This international tournament, organised jointly by Anglo-Chinese Junior College and SAID, brings together national and high-quality school teams from all around the world each year, to compete in exciting debates.

In 2022, the annual Oldham Cup will be held on one long weekend, on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of April 2022. The tournament will be divided into two leagues: the Schools League and the National Team League. Certificates will be provided to all participants, and awards will be given to breaking teams and top speakers.

Registration for both Leagues will start in February 2022. Be sure to save the dates for this exciting competitive opportunity!

Oldham Cup 2021 Asia-Pacific and Atlantic League is a wrap! We would like to congratulate all participants for such a wonderful showing at the tournament last weekend. It was truly a pleasure to watch all your speeches over the course of the tournament!

We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to our CAP members, Invited Adjudicators, and Digital Directors for their tireless work. A great big thank you also to the coaches, team managers, and debaters for taking part in the event. We would also like to express a special thank you also to our advisor, Mr Loke Wing Fatt.

Finally, we would like to congratulate CWSDC Summer and FDT Junior Green for clinching the Senior and Junior Championship titles of Oldham Cup 2021 Asia-Pacific and Atlantic League respectively! Congratulations also to the Senior and Junior 1st Runner Ups, ACJC A and Learning Leaders Blue!

Dear Debaters,

Good evening! The prepared motion for the Asia-Pacific and Atlantic League of Oldham Cup 2021 is out! The motion for Round 1 and 2 of both senior and junior divisions, which will be debated on the 23rd of April, reads:

"THBT environmental activists should focus on the culpability of large corporations for environmental degradation, rather than emphasize the role of personal responsibility (e.g. using less water, recycling household waste)"

Teams are expected to prep both sides of the motion.

Reckon you have what it takes to win 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 leagues of the 7th Oldham Cup 2021?

We are excited to remind you all about the special competition opportunities taking place at Oldham Cup 2021! This year, on top of having a chance to be crowned Senior Category Champions, the top 16 Breaking Senior Category Teams will automatically be admitted to the 7th Oldham Cup 2021 International League.

These teams will get the chance to cut their teeth against 30 national teams without having to pay any registration fees, and will have full eligibility to break at and even win the 7th Oldham Cup 2021 International League as well! The international league will take place on the 𝟑𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏.

After the weekend of the Asia-Pacific and Atlantic League, breaking teams will have till 𝟐𝟑𝟓𝟗, 𝟐𝟕𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐥 to confirm whether they want to take up the gauntlet at the National League! We will send you a google form via email after the breaks, where you can tell us whether you would like to participate then! If not, slots will be opened up to the next highest-ranking teams on the tab.

Hello everybody! We are now less than a month from the tournament, and so we would like to release some reminders on the tournament format:

1)𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁: The tournament will operate using a standard WSDC Format of six 8-minute speeches and two 4-minute reply speeches, with no breaks between the Opposition Whip and Reply speeches. The preparation time for the Impromptu Rounds for the tournament will be 𝟯𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀.

2)𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀: The 7th Oldham Cup will consist of 6 Preliminary Rounds followed by Senior and Junior Octo-Finals.

3)𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬: 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝟏 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐 will be prepared rounds, with teams debating the 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 on opposite sides for both rounds. We will release the motion on the 𝟭𝟲𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟭, exactly 1 week before the start of the tournament on Facebook and by email, so do keep an eye out for it. All other rounds of the tournament will be impromptu rounds.

Also, teams who have not registered a judge would have just gotten an email from [email protected], so please check your inboxes! Hello everybody! We are now one month to the tournament date, and we are all excited to host you! Before the start of this year’s Oldham Cup, we would like to introduce you to our founder: Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham, after whom the competition is named!

Bishop Oldham was the founder and bishop of the Methodist Church in Malaya. In February 1885, Oldham chanced upon the premises of the Celestial Reasoning Association, a debating society that Chinese Merchants in Singapore had formed as a way to develop their proficiency in the English Language. Having a passion for education and oratory, Oldham helped grow the society into the Anglo-Chinese School, with funding raised entirely from the community.

The roots of the ACS Family are firmly in Debate and Oratory. Today, the ACS family has grown to include seven schools in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The organisers of the 7th Oldham Cup celebrate Bishop Oldham, and continue his long legacy of developing the speech arts in Singapore and elsewhere.
