Proud to share that Prof Benjamin Tee from NUS Materials Science and Engineering has been shortlisted as one of the five leading scientists selected worldwide for the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) A F Harvey Engineering Research Prize!🎉

This prestigious IET's award, with an annual prize fund of £500,000, recognises world-leading researchers whose work is shaping the future of radar and microwave engineering, lasers and optoelectronics, and medical engineering.

Congratulations to Prof Benjamin Tee on this outstanding achievement, and we wish him every success in winning this award!

The NUS–NTHU Bilateral Materials Symposium was held on 8 June in Taiwan, bringing together faculty and students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS-MSE) and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, National Tsing Hua University (NTHU-MSE).

Led by Dr. Fang-Cheng Liang, our NUS faculty members, Prof. Benjamin C. K. Tee, Prof. Lance Li, Prof. Hui Ying Yang, Asst. Prof. Wan Yi, and Asst. Prof. Ahmet Avsar represented NUS MSE at the symposium, sharing their research expertise and strengthening collaborative ties through engaging discussions and knowledge exchange.

This visit not only laid a stronger foundation for future academic exchange, talent development, industry-academia collaboration, and international partnership between the two institutions, but also opened a new chapter in the collaboration between NUS and NTHU.

"I think the most important part of preparing for scholarships is about truly understanding what you want to do and why. I was quite fortunate to discover my passion for materials science relatively early, which gave me the chance to think deeply about whether it was something I genuinely wanted to pursue. I tried to test my interest and suitability, as well as seeking for opportunities in different ways, by challenging myself in science and math subjects, taking the H3 Semiconductor Physics course, and joining research and summer programmes that allowed me to experience what studying this field might actually be like.

Once I became more certain, I could plan ahead with more focus and intention. That sense of direction helped me choose opportunities that aligned with my goals; not only academic ones, but also community projects and competitions where I could grow and contribute in meaningful ways.

Looking back, I think it’s really about having clarity and purpose - knowing what feels right, planning thoughtfully, and being sincere in everything I do. Thanks to that clarity, I was able to go into my scholarship interviews with confidence and sincerity as I could explain my goals, interests, and future plans naturally. I still remember one of the interviewers saying, ‘She has everything planned out very well.’ That moment meant a lot to me, because it showed that my preparation and sense of direction truly came through. I’m still learning every day, but I’m very grateful for all the guidance and opportunities that helped me grow along the way."
