The world must know: how our nonspeakers present themselves is not what they’re thinking. Many struggle to control their bodies. Underneath, they are so intelligent.

With the right tools, we can unlock their thoughts. And the world needs them.

Tom is on a mission to bring Spelling to Communicate into every school and university. What a great goal! My son is 7 and a nonspeaker, Tom showed me a version of his future I hope to see more of. Go Tom!

The best piece of advice I ever got about getting my autistic son to sleep was from an OT.

She told me that for many autistic kids, the body needs to get it all out before it can relax. Not wind down. Get it all out.

We were doing the polar opposite. Dimming the lights, reading a book, keeping everything calm. And once we were done he would still be jumping in bed.

So we introduced something we call Tickle Monster.

I walk into his room and say I’m the Tickle Monster. He knows exactly what’s going to happen. We tumble, I tickle him, he climbs on my back, we run around. Full chaos for 20 minutes.

Then we take a break, go to the bathroom, brush his teeth.

A few minutes after that he starts yawning. And we know he’s ready.

Since we started doing this he’s been sleeping through many more nights.

This works especially well for kids with a sensory seeking profile — kids who need a lot of physical input to feel regulated. Autistic or not.

If your kid fights bedtime every night, it might be worth trying before you assume it’s a sleep problem.

The best piece of advice I ever got about managing my autistic son’s expectations.

A friend told me: whatever your child gets in a situation, they’ll expect it every time.

So we stopped giving candy & ice cream at the grocery store. Instead we made a rule — he can always have apples or walnuts.

Took a week or two. Now he’s happy with it, and so are we.

Small rule. Big difference.

He can hear everything. That changed how I handle strangers.

When someone asks my non-speaking son ‘what’s your name?’ and looks to me confused — I used to feel the pressure to explain.

But explaining in front of him labels him in that moment. He’s right there.

Now I just smile, nod, and we move on.

I searched for an AAC app for my son and couldn’t find one that worked on his iPad in Swedish. Most AAC apps are designed for English speakers — but most kids in the world aren’t. So I built Tala. Available in Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Norwegian, Danish & English. Research shows that 89% of children using AAC made gains in speech. Not a single child lost it.
