IMPORTANT FOR ALL STUDENTS WHO HAVE ARRIVED IN SWEDEN

All students who have now arrived in Sweden should download and set up the Mecenat app on their mobile phones. 📱🎓

Please note: This is for STUDENTS — not for spouses/dependents.

Mecenat provides you with a digital student ID and gives access to various student discounts across Sweden. Once your student status is registered and your digital card becomes available, always check which transport symbols/logos appear on your card before purchasing a student ticket.

🚆 Especially important for buses & trains:
If you purchase a student-discounted public transport ticket, you may be required during ticket inspection to show a valid student ID carrying the appropriate transport logo/symbol. Simply buying a student ticket does not automatically prove that you are eligible for the discount.

For example, students travelling with SL in Stockholm need an approved student ID with the SL logo to use the student fare, and should also be prepared to show identification. If you cannot prove your eligibility during an inspection, you may face an additional charge/fine.

🚄 The same principle applies to other transport operators, although their requirements may differ. For example, SJ student fares require the appropriate SJ logo, while many regional transport companies use the Studentresesymbolen. So always check the logo on your Mecenat card before travelling on a discounted ticket.

💰 Mecenat is useful beyond public transport too. Your student status can give you access to various student discounts and offers, so it is worth setting up soon after your university registration is completed.

📌 My suggestion to all newly arrived students:
Download the app → activate your digital student ID → check that your current semester details are correct → check the transport logo before buying a student/reduced-fare ticket → keep the app accessible whenever travelling.

Mecenat – official information and help

Please share this with other newly arrived students as well. 🇵🇰🇸🇪❤️

🇸🇪 Important Update Regarding Sweden's New Family Reunification Rules

Many students are concerned about the recently proposed changes to Sweden's family reunification rules, particularly those planning to study in Sweden with their spouse and children.

I have gone through the published legislation and parliamentary material carefully. At this stage, I have not found anything that clearly states that the existing possibility for family members to accompany Bachelor's or Master's students in higher education is being abolished.

However, I would also advise everyone not to jump to conclusions yet.

The new legislation contains several changes to family reunification rules, including a two-year residence requirement in certain cases. The rules concerning family members of higher-education students are governed through specific provisions, and a proper interpretation of how the new changes will be implemented in student cases is important.

Therefore, rather than saying that “spouse visas for students have stopped” or, on the other hand, guaranteeing that “nothing will change for students,” I believe it is better to wait for Migrationsverket's official updated guidance and explanation regarding Bachelor's/Master's students and their accompanying family members.

For now:

Please don't panic.
There is currently no clear wording in the material I have reviewed saying that BS/MS students will no longer be able to bring their spouse or eligible children.

At the same time, we should wait for the authorities to clarify exactly how the new rules will be interpreted and applied in practice.

Once Migrationsverket publishes its updated guidance, In Sha Allah, I will study it carefully and share a proper explanation with everyone.

Until then, please avoid spreading statements such as “Sweden has stopped spouse visas for international students” as a confirmed fact.

Let's wait for the official interpretation. 🇸🇪

⚠️ URGENT – LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WITH MANDATORY ROLL CALL ON 17 AUGUST 2026 🇸🇪

This post is ONLY for Linköping University students whose programme has a mandatory roll call on 17 August 2026 and who are still unable to travel because their residence permit decision or UT card has not arrived.

⏰ PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE TIMING

Today is 13 August.
Tomorrow, 14 August, is a public holiday in Pakistan, followed by Saturday and Sunday, and then we reach 17 August – the mandatory roll call date.

This leaves extremely limited working time for matters involving the Swedish Migration Agency/Embassy and the university.

Therefore, if you already know that you cannot reach Linköping University by your mandatory roll call and you intend to protect your eligibility for a tuition fee refund, this is the time to act rather than waiting until the deadline.

What should you do?

1️⃣ Withdraw your residence permit application from Migrationsverket immediately.

Inform the Swedish Migration Agency that you wish to withdraw your pending residence permit application because you will not be able to attend your university’s mandatory roll call on 17 August 2026.

Migrationsverket will then process the withdrawal and close/settle your residence permit case. Keep the withdrawal decision/confirmation or other official documentation you receive from Migrationsverket, as it may be required as supporting documentation for your tuition fee refund request.

2️⃣ After your migration case has been settled, proceed with Linköping University’s tuition fee refund application.

Use the university’s official tuition fee refund form/application, select the reason applicable to your circumstances, and attach the required supporting documentation, including the relevant Migrationsverket decision/confirmation, where required.

⚠️ DO NOT WAIT UNTIL 17 AUGUST

If 17 August 2026 is also the relevant deadline affecting your eligibility for a tuition fee refund, waiting until the last moment could unnecessarily put a substantial amount of tuition fee at risk.

Your residence permit or UT card may still arrive, but unfortunately nobody can guarantee when it will arrive. You have to make your decision based on the deadline that applies to your programme and your individual situation.

📌 VERY IMPORTANT

This post is ONLY for Linköping University students whose mandatory roll call is on 17 August 2026.

It is NOT general advice for every Linköping University student or students of other Swedish universities.

If Linköping University has already given you an individual extension, a different roll-call date, or different refund instructions in writing, then follow the instructions applicable to your own case.

Please make your decision carefully and keep copies of all emails, confirmations, decisions and submitted forms.

You have already waited and worked hard for your admission and residence permit. At this stage, make sure that while hoping for the best, you also protect your tuition fee and do not unintentionally miss an important deadline.

May Allah make things easier for every student still waiting and guide everyone towards the best decision. Ameen. 🤲🇸🇪

⚠️ IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR STUDENTS STILL WAITING FOR THEIR SWEDEN RESIDENCE PERMIT 🇸🇪

I know many students are currently going through a very difficult and confusing situation.

Some are still waiting for their residence permit decision, some have not completed biometrics yet, while others have already received a positive decision but are still waiting for their residence permit card (UT card).

At the same time, university arrival and registration deadlines are getting closer. For some programmes, including certain programmes at Linköping University, the last arrival date communicated to students is 17 August 2026.

At this stage, please do not make a decision emotionally or simply because someone else is waiting or withdrawing. Every student's university, programme, visa status and refund conditions may be different.

If your residence permit or UT card is still pending, contact your university immediately and get clear answers in writing about the following:

1. What is the final date on which I can arrive and join my programme?
Do not assume that the normal programme starting date is automatically your final arrival date.

2. Can the university extend my arrival/enrolment deadline?
If yes, ask them to confirm the exact extended date in writing.

3. What is the final deadline for requesting a tuition fee refund?
This is extremely important.

4. If you give me an extension to join the programme, does that extension ALSO extend my tuition fee refund deadline?

⚠️ This fourth question is particularly important.

An university may allow you to arrive or register later, but that does not necessarily mean that your refund deadline has also been extended.

For example, imagine the university gives you additional time to arrive. You decide to keep waiting for your residence permit because you now have an extension. But if the refund deadline expires during that waiting period, you could potentially put a significant amount of tuition fee at risk.

So please don't look at the joining extension alone.

You need to understand both timelines separately:

Latest permitted arrival/joining date
AND
Last date on which you remain eligible to request a tuition fee refund

If your university does NOT give you an extension

If your last permissible arrival date is approaching, your residence permit/travel situation is still uncertain, and your tuition fee refund deadline is also approaching, then you need to seriously assess your options.

Do not take an unnecessary financial risk simply because you are hoping that a decision or UT card might arrive at the last moment.

Check the university's policy, communicate with them in writing, and then make an informed decision about whether you should continue waiting or withdraw within the permitted timeframe and request a refund, if eligible.

If your university DOES give you an extension

That is certainly positive because you have additional time.

But again, ask one more question before relaxing:

“Does my extended arrival date also protect/extend my eligibility for a tuition fee refund?”

If the answer is yes and they confirm it in writing, you have more room to wait.

If the answer is no, then you still have an important financial decision to make before the refund deadline.

For students whose visa is already granted but UT card is pending

Your situation is obviously different from someone whose residence permit decision itself is still pending.

Still, if you cannot travel without receiving the required residence permit card/documentation before your university's final arrival date, contact your university immediately and explain your situation. Ask for written confirmation of the latest date they can accommodate your arrival.

Please don't assume that because the permit has been granted, the university deadline automatically stops applying.

Most importantly — don't copy another student's decision

One student may be advised to wait.

Another may need to withdraw.

A third may already have a positive visa decision and only be waiting for the card.

And another university may have a completely different refund or late-arrival policy.

There cannot be one answer for everyone.

Before deciding, know these three dates clearly:

📅 Your final arrival/registration date
📅 Your extended arrival date, if granted
📅 Your final tuition fee refund deadline

And keep the university's response in writing/email.

You have already done everything that was in your control.

You applied for admission.
You paid your tuition fee.
You submitted your residence permit application.
You provided the required documents.
You completed the formalities asked from you.

Now make the remaining decision carefully, based on facts rather than panic.

And after doing everything within your control, put your trust in Allah. 🤲

Sometimes a delay tests our patience, and sometimes what we desperately want may not ultimately be what is best for us.

Trust Allah, but make your decision wisely.

Protect your academic opportunity, but at the same time do not unnecessarily put a substantial tuition fee at risk without first understanding the university's refund deadline.

May Allah make the path easier for every student still waiting, bring good news for them, and guide everyone towards the decision that is best for their future. Aameen. 🤲🇸🇪
