Swedish National Research School in Medical Bioinformatics

Applications are open for the Swedish National Graduate School in Medical Bioinformatics 2026 intake! Here are a few reasons why this is a great program:
- You get a full menu of Bioinformatics courses, delivered on a schedule made with your student in mind. No problem with prerequisites or courses being full, an admitted student is guaranteed a spot in all our courses. Even if they have a need to take courses out of sequence, they can usually still get a spot.
- Our teachers have been running their MedBioInfo course for up to eight years; yearly course evaluations and follow-up mean that quality is always improving.
- Our Admissions Committee, comprising Bioinformatics faculty from multiple Swedish universities, ensures that all our students are suited for computational coursework.

On October 13-14 we had our Annual Meeting at Yasuragi 🧘. We had very interesting presentations, poster sessions, mentor meetings and of course some well deserved relaxation. Thank you to all the organizers, faculty members and students who attended! 💻

A pleasure to coordinate the the National Research School of Medical Bioinformatics PhD course in Applied Bioinformatics, for the second time at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.

To all current and prospective 1st year PhD students studying Bioinformatics in Sweden,

You are invited to apply to MedBioInfo, the National Graduate School in Medical Bioinformatics, established to provide advanced training in bioinformatics to the next generation of world-class life-science researchers. Thanks to a recently approved extension of time, we are admitting students again this year. If admitted you will join a competitively selected student community. We have in recent years attained a good gender balance. Our 42 affiliated faculty members include most of the leading bioinformaticians in Sweden, and we also draw on the faculty of NORBIS, our Norwegian sister school. Alongside your peers, this will form a key part of your future scientific network. Our courses are short, worth 3 or 5 HP(ECTS). Each course typically requires a one-week at-home pre-assignment, one week in residence, and (often) a take-home one-week post-assignment. You would typically take two courses per year, for a total of 3 years. The courses are more specialised than can be provided by your home university. You will be matched with a faculty mentor, providing a perspective and advice complementary to that of your advisor. We also have an annual meeting where you will attend faculty talks and soft-skills workshops, present your research, network, and get feedback. You will be granted a yearly travel budget. Best of all, this should be fun.

You are eligible to apply if you began or will begin your PhD between January 2022 and April 2023, though there is flexibility in this. Target groups include PhD students in Life Science doing primarily computational research.Selection criteria include your CV, transcript, and the relevance of your research project. You will also need an endorsement letter from your advisor and a suitable laptop. We will strive to have a broad distribution of Swedish home universities as well as a good gender balance..

Please be aware that, if admitted, you should plan to attend your first course, "Applied Bioinformatics" in Uppsala, May 29 – Jun 2. Several of our core courses require programming in Python. If your Python background is weak, you will need to start strengthening your skills soon after admissions. There are many online courses, and we also recommend Shaw's "Python 3 the hard way." Considering the climate, we ask students to avoid flying to MedBioInfo events.

The application deadline is February 28, 2023. We aim to enroll 20-30 incoming students per year. Research position in Bioinformatics Teaching (1 year) available at Stockholm University, Sweden

We have an opening to do Bioinformatics teaching research at Stockholm University, Sweden. I hope you can help forward this announcement to your department or others who may be interested. Our Rector has invested three rounds of funding in the development of our MS-level Bioinformatics course KB7016/KB7021, which we have used to implement flipped lectures, create video tutorials, virtualize the lab exercises, and in other ways create a remarkable and unique distance and hybrid course with greatly improved learning outcomes and student evaluations. Now we would like to find a brilliant scientist with pedagogical interests to create a Massively Open Online Course (MOOC) based on this, and write an accompanying pedagogical article.

The ideal candidate would have a background in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field. They will also have a strong interest in teaching, though prior pedagogical publications are not strictly required. The candidate can also become involved in subject research if there is time and interest, and with that in mind research merits in RNA structure, protein-protein interactions, and deep learning, though not required, are a definite plus. Desk space will be provided at SciLifeLab Solna and SLU Uppsala.

Swedish workers enjoy considerable benefits including vacations, parental leave, medical insurance, and schooling. Women, the handicapped, and certain minority groups underrepresented in Bioinformatics are encouraged to apply. We will provide full-time salary for one year. While there is no guarantee of extension, we are to that end currently applying for additional pedagogical development funding from multiple sources.
