Human Nature Exploration

Human Nature Exploration HumaNatE - Human Nature Exploration is a joint programme of Agora for Biosystems and the Sigtuna Foundation

HumaNatE is an interdisciplinary, intercultural and international dialogue forum for the exploration of the human nature and relation to Nature. The objectives of HumaNatE are to explore the roots of human perception, intention and behavior, with initial focus on the human capacity to adapt and innovate. HumaNatE points to the importance of religion and values/ethics as complementary to science, w

ith three levels of exploration:

1) International workshops and conferences with significant individuals from natural sciences, the humanities, philosophy and religion giving their perspective on thematic issues

2) Establishing a web-forum with video recorded interviews and conferences, together with proper academic and popular publications

3) Developing HumaNatE as a node for the international dialogue and interchange over these issues. Science education for theologians is another objective. HumaNatE is primarily funded by a grant from The John Templeton Foundation.

In October 2024, the Agora for Biosystems organized a conference on "Panpsychism and Non-local Consciousness" in Sigtuna, Sweden. A follow-up discussion on universal consciousness and mystical experiences is given here by two of the conference participants, neuroscientist Christof Koch and philosopher Philip Goff:

Christof Koch is a hugely influential figure in the science of consciousness. I was somewhat taken aback at a recent conference when Christof spoke of the re...

While the past year has been difficult in many respects, there are some lights in the darkness, as almost always. Despite delays due to the pandemic, our research and computational modeling related to our international project, Neurophilosophy of Free Will have progressed and resulted in a few new publications, including the two books and article below:

- Free Will – Philosophers and Neuroscientists in Conversation (U. Maoz, W. Sinnott-Armstrong, eds.) https://global.oup.com/academic/product/free-will-9780197572153?cc=se&lang=en&
- Fri vilja och mänskligt ansvar (A. Linderman, H. Liljenstrom, eds.) https://fritanke.se/bokhandel/bocker/fri-vilja-och-manskligt-ansvar/
- Consciousness, decision making, and volition: freedom beyond chance and necessity, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12064-021-00346-6

NY BOK!

Student Competition for Free Will fellowship

We invite applications for one or more fellowships on the philosophy and neuroscience of free will and moral responsibility, including how the brain enables conscious, causal control of decisions and actions. Support can be requested for part or full time for 6-12 months and could potentially be extended to a second year. Predoctoral students can request up to $25,000 per year in funding, and postdocs can request up to $50,000 per year. These positions are funded by the John Templeton Foundation and the Fetzer Institute. For more information on the project, see https://neurophil-freewill.org

We have had a very exciting year, with the startup of our new project on the Neurophilosophy of Free Will, and several seminars and symposia related to that topic. We are now looking forward to another exciting year, with e.g. visits by Fritjof Capra in March and the 3rd International Conference on Free Will in June. But now is time for some peaceful and joyous Christmas holidays. Looking forward to seeing you next year.
