Lund University Critical Animal Studies Institute

We end our morning period at the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies with a panel discussion featuring representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. It will focus on defending animal interests in changing political climates and strengthening cross-border dialogue. The panel discussion will be moderated by Camilla Bergvall.

Camilla Bergvall is an author and former chair of Sweden's leading animal rights and welfare organisation Project1882 (Djurens Rätt). Last year, her book “Djurfabrikerna: myten om den glada bondgården” (Factory farming: The Myth of the Happy Farm) was published, which tells the story of how factory farms in Sweden came to be and why we need to dismantle them – for the animals, public health and the climate. Camilla has been involved in animal rights issues for more than fifteen years.

The second presentation of the afternoon session at the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies will turn to the emerging field of green criminology, exploring the concepts of crime and harm against animals and the environment.

The presentation will be given by Susanne Alm, Professor of Criminology at Stockholm University and one of the founders of the Green Criminology Working Group at the Department of Criminology. Her research in green criminology examines crime and harm affecting animals in the meat and dairy industries, the fast-fashion industry, and industrial forestry. Within traditional criminology, Alm has also studied the effects of imprisonment and the relationship between eviction and criminal offending.

We will start the afternoon period of the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies with a presentation about animals in science given by Maria Valsjö.

Maria Valsjö is a 3R (Replace, Reduce, Refine) Specialist with a particular focus on animal welfare, working at the Swedish Foundation for Research Without Animal Experiments (Forska utan djurförsök). She focuses on advancing animal-free research methods and promoting high standards of animal welfare where alternatives are not yet available. Valsjö is a long-term member of the Animal Ethics Committee, with a career spanning both public and private research sectors. She is also actively engaged in communication and policy discussions at the national and European levels, supporting the transition toward more human-relevant and ethical research.

The second presentation in the morning period of the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies will be given by Visa Kurki.

Visa Kurki is a Finnish legal scholar and philosopher, working as professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Helsinki. He is also the director of the Helsinki Animal Law Centre, the president of the Finnish Legal Philosophy Society (SOFY), and vice president of the Finnish Society for Animal Rights Law. His work on legal personhood has been cited in four US animal personhood trials, including two amicus curiae briefs by Harvard professor Laurence Tribe. At the symposium, he will give a presentation about the legal status of animals.

It is our pleasure to announce Kadri Aavik as our first presenter at the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies, 2026.

Kadri Aavik is an Associate Professor of Gender Studies at Tallinn University, Estonia. She works with critical animal studies, vegan studies, gender and feminist studies, particularly critical studies on men and masculinities, and their intersections. She has studied vegan men, masculinities, and the institutional dimensions of speciesism and is currently working on a book on vegan parenting. At the symposium, she will give a presentation about the EU milk subsidy and the milk scheme in European schools.

🐾 How might animal studies genuinely take animal perspectives into account? This question animates this international conference. While disciplinary approaches may vary widely, we hold that scholarship on animal lives carries an underlying responsibility: a compassionate orientation toward the beings it examines. This commitment is grounded in the recognition of the profound suffering that animal lives endure under contemporary conditions.

💡 To explore this subject-matter we invite contributions from across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences that grapple with the methodological, epistemological, and ethical challenges of accessing the experience, interests, and viewpoints of non-human animals—not merely as species or categories, but as singular beings with individual lives. We hope that we can make a contribution not only to the field of animal studies broadly defined, but to re-considering, re-evaluating and re-imagining ways in which animals are active participants in creating worldviews.

動物研究如何能真正納入動物自身的視角？這個問題正是本次國際研討會的核心關懷。儘管各學科的方法可能差異甚大，我們認為，對動物生命的研究本身承載著一種基本責任：以一種富於同情與關懷的取向面對研究對象。這一基本責任奠基於我們對當代情境中動物所承受之深層苦難。

🌿 為探討此一議題，我們誠摯邀請人文學、社會科學與自然科學領域的研究者投稿，針對如何接近非人動物之經驗、利益與觀點所涉及的方法論、認識論與倫理挑戰進行探討——不僅將動物視為物種或分類單位，而是視為擁有個體生命的存在。本次研討會期望不僅能對廣義的動物研究領域有所貢獻，更能重新思考、評估並想像動物如何作為積極行動者參與世界觀的生成。
