Lund University Critical Animal Studies Institute (LUCASI) is a platform for the growing field of Critical Animal Studies.

Our goals are centred on education, continued networking and research. Welcome to the Critical Animal Studies Network at Lund University. Critical animal studies (CAS) is a growing interest among students and scholars, reflected in the increasing number of CAS-related courses appearing internationally, as well as a significant expansion in research interests within the field. Since 2011, CAS has been expanding in both research and education at Lund University. This work has among other things led to the establishment of the award winning and highly sought after course Critical Animal Studies: Animals in Society, Culture and the Media, the new open-access journal Politics and Animals, research conferences and the building of an extensive network of national and international scholars. In February 2016 the Lund University Critical Animal Studies Network was formed with the aim of consolidating these initiatives, and to act as a platform for future work in the field of CAS at Lund University. With that in mind, the goals for this network are centred on education, continued networking and research. Research
Critical animal studies is an emerging field, and it is vital to continue building on research in this area. The network aims to act as a cohesive group in order to produce collaborative research projects. Education
The current course Critical Animal Studies: Animals in Society, Culture and the Media is now in its fifth year. Facilitating student participation and learning in the area of critical animal studies is important for the field as a whole, to further research and expand knowledge. Network
One of the Network’s primary functions is to serve as an interdisciplinary hub for scholars and students dedicated to working with critical animal studies. International networking and research is a significant part of promoting the field, and will be aided by hosting meetings, workshops and outreach activities both within and outside the academic community. Currently the Lund University Critical Animal Studies Network has formal connections to several centers for research and education in the fields of human-animal studies and critical animal studies.

How do we turn the knowledge we gain in a symposium into fuel for action? And how do we reflect on our discussions and set goals for the future?

To help our participants with these questions, the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies will conclude with a workshop on strategic approaches to animal rights activism led by Niklas Hill.

Niklas Hill is the Director of the Institute for the Development of Democracy (Institutet för demokratiutveckling) and an affiliated researcher at the Centre for Civil Society Research at Marie Cederschiöld University. A historian and civil society expert, he has extensive experience supporting organisations in their development and has gained an insider’s perspective on a wide range of associations and their work. Hill is also the Managing Director of Trinambai, a publishing house specialising in engagement, participation, and organizational development.

At the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Animal Studies, we will have a panel discussion titled: ‘Defending animals in the face of the conservative winds’. It will feature representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Our panellist from Sweden is Tina Hogevik

Tina Hogevik has chaired Djurens Rätt (Project 1882), Sweden’s leading animal rights organisation, since 2025. Active in the animal rights movement for nearly twenty years, she has worked to strengthen support for animals through public advocacy and movement-building, focusing on increasing effectiveness and creating long-term impact. As chair, she leads the board of Djurens Rätt and represents the organisation in its mission to advance a society where animals are respected as individuals with the right to their own lives.

It will feature representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Our panellist from Denmark is Britta Riis.

Britta Riis is CEO of Dyrenes Beskyttelse (Animal Protection Denmark), Denmark's leading animal welfare organisation. Holding a degree in political science (cand.scient.pol.), she has extensive experience in advocacy, leadership and policy development. She also serves on the boards of Eurogroup for Animals, World Federation for Animals, and Organic Denmark. Her professional interests include animal welfare, biodiversity, public policy and the role of civil society in shaping sustainable and ethical societies.

It will feature representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Our panellist from Latvia is Katrīna Krīgere.

Katrīna Krīgere co-founded Dzīvnieku brīvība (Animal Freedom) in 2012 and helped transform it from a grassroots initiative into a professional animal advocacy organisation with 11 staff members. Together with her team, she has led corporate and legislative campaigns, investigations, lobbying efforts, and advocacy projects that have delivered major victories for animals, including securing bans on the use of wild animals in circuses and fur farming, as well as driving the transition of Latvia’s egg industry from cage-based to cage-free production. Her expertise includes campaign strategy, stakeholder engagement, policy development, and project management, with a focus on achieving systemic change for farmed animals.

It will feature representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Our panellist from Norway is Siri Martinsen.

Siri Martinsen is a Norwegian veterinarian and CEO of animal rights organisation NOAH. Siri has been involved in the animal rights movement most of her life and started working as a spokesperson for NOAH in 1993. Siri was the first veterinarian in Norway to complete her degree without animal testing. She has served as a board member of InterNICHE, a non-profit working to promote alternatives to animal testing, and as a member of the Norwegian National Committee for the Protection of Animals used for Scientific Purposes.

It will feature representatives from leading animal advocacy organisations in the Nordic and Baltic regions. Our panellist from Lithuania is Gabrielė Vaitkevičiūtė.

Gabrielė Vaitkevičiūtė is an animal rights advocate and the director of the organisation Tušti narvai. For the past twelve years, she has been working to reduce animal suffering and strengthen animal protection in Lithuania, with a focus on issues such as banning fur farming and ongoing discussions around more humane farming practices.
