We spark little minds to explore big - where learning reaches every child!

Dr Maria Montessori stated that by the age of 2.5 years, your child’s brain is naturally primed for language, and it is essential to provide the foundation they need.

When teaching phonics, do you ask yourself:

❓How do I actually teach the letter? (I show you in the PDF)
❓How many letters can I teach in one go? (Usually 3, but it can depend on your child)
❓At what age is my child ready to start? (You can from 2.5 years)
❓Should I be teaching letter names or letter sounds? (Sounds first)
❓Do I have to buy an expensive set of materials? (No)
❓What order should I teach in?  (I show you in the PDF)
❓How do I know if they have mastered the sound?  (I show you in the PDF)
❓How and when do I teach them to start writing letters?  (I show you in the PDF)

It’s overwhelming, which is why we leave it to the teachers. But as parents, we are our children’s first teachers, and we must understand how to support their early reading to ensure the whole experience is a success.

In this PDF, I show you how to:
Make your Sandpaper Letter resource
Get started with letter sounds
The exact method and order for teaching sounds
Know when your child has mastered a sound

Please don’t skip activities that support their phonemic awareness first.

🎶 We love singing nursery rhymes to our children because they remind us of our childhood, and it's fun to experiment with rhymes together. Nursery rhymes effectively support literacy development, particularly phonological awareness skills through rhyme, alliteration, syllables and tapping to the beat.

🍎 You can sing the song "Apples and Bananas" confidently with your child because here's what they are learning while enjoying a good tune together. 🍌

By changing the initial sound of "apples" while keeping the rest of the word the same, your child is learning to:
- Isolate sounds as they recognise individual sounds within words.
- Manipulate sounds as they experiment with changing sounds to create new words.
- Develop auditory discrimination as they listen carefully to the changing sounds.
Leading to developing phonological awareness that increases successful reading and spelling skills in the future.

⭐️ Another excellent collection of children's songs is from the award-winning active music-making provider Boogie Mites in our early reading program. Their fabulous songs enhance your child's phonological awareness, are original, and feel good when you sing them together.

Your child will be moving to the beat, singing and dancing, and learning their phonics, too! We love how these songs brilliantly motivate your child to warm up before exploring the hands-on activities for early reading.

📣 We're singing and dancing about phonological awareness this month, and the activities in our phonics program are on point with helping your child to start reading successfully.

📚 Research shows that children can find reading very difficult if they don't get enough exposure to activities that help to refine their phonological awareness.

You can help your child by playing listening games that include rhyming words.

Grab some percussion instruments and play games that help them match and differentiate between different sounds.

Encourage as much hands-on play as possible. Play encourages lots of language exploration, which is vital for literacy development.

If you want to give your child a strong start in phonics, then we have a phonics program that may be right for your child.

The aim of learning phonics is to start reading, and while there's no "best sequence" to teach phonics, it makes you wonder which letter to begin with first. You can start with the most commonly occurring letters of the alphabet, like s, a, t or m, or even better, start with the first letter of your child's name. We often introduce the first letter of the child's name in the Montessori environment, which helps them begin to recognise their names.

It's a big milestone for your child, and it's common for parents to feel overwhelmed by the endless information on how to support their children in grasping phonics and becoming confident readers.

If you are looking for on-demand classes or lesson plans with engaging activities to help your child with phonics, we have an early reading program for young children based around play and hands-on learning with linked on-demand classes.

📚 Reading tips are so important, but what about caring for books? 📚

Caring for books should start as soon as you read to your little one as they observe and absorb everything you do. Your actions will teach them to care for books they can enjoy time and time again and even pass on to siblings. ⭐️

As with all activities, there's a beginning and an end, and with books, it starts with taking them off the shelf and ends with putting them back on the shelf. If we instil this at an early age, children will know that books are precious and should be cherished. ❤️

Remember these simple tips to instil a love for books that last a lifetime.

And a huge pile-up of books next to the shelf!

Encouraging your child to keep up their enthusiasm to learn phonics can be tricky, especially if they are always sitting at a table with endless worksheets or passive screen time. 😱

⭐️ Our phonics early reading program is about hands-on learning without a pen. Young hands need to manipulate objects and not hold a pen — there's plenty of time for that later on. Their hand muscles need strengthening, and our activities teach correct sounds directly to your child, as well as reading, writing, and fine motor development.

⭐️ We focus on refining listening skills through our activities with brilliant phonics songs from the award-winning and . ❤️ It involves "active screen learning", encouraging fine and gross motor movement. But because our program is so flexible, you can switch to 100% screen-free learning and teach it yourself to your little one, boosting those precious bonding moments.

⭐️ We add lots of play and fun in our lessons with our cute alien character, Zig Zig, who is on a mission and needs your child's help. Our teacher encourages and builds your child's self-esteem through playful presentations that even you will enjoy!
