What is grammar?
Grammar describes the rules that help us put words together to make sentences. It shows us how to speak and write clearly.
Origin of the word "grammar"
The English word grammar comes from the Greek grammatike, meaning “the art of letters” or “the study of writing and language.”
Why grammar matters
Grammar helps us share ideas, ask questions and understand other people. Without grammar, communication can be confusing or unclear.
History of grammar
Grammar has been studied for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks were among the first to analyze language rules. Later, Roman scholars adapted these ideas to Latin. During the Middle Ages, grammar became a main subject in education. In the 18th and 19th centuries, European scholars developed rules for many languages. Today, grammar continues to evolve, with modern linguists studying how people actually use language in everyday life.
Prescriptive grammar vs descriptive grammar
Prescriptive grammar tells us how language should be used. Descriptive grammar explains how people actually use grammar in real-life situations. Both views are important.
