Ever heard of a condition called Alexia without Agraphia? Here’s a story about the symptom:

Have you ever imagined that maybe someday you would meet someone who can write, but not read?
I mean how is that possible?? How would someone be able to draw letters in the first place, but then not be able to recognise what they wrote!
What do you think it would be? Are they sick, pretending, or just plain stupid? Luckily, no one is that stupid.
This is actually, believe it or not, a real medical symptom called Alexia without Agraphia or Pure Alexia (I know! Even the name is sexy!).
So how does it happen? It’s quite simple actually. It’s just a problem with vision.
So, we have an area in our brain in the dominant occipital lobe (which we know is responsible for vision), which is responsible for recognising words and word patterns. Any idea what is called?
The Visual Word Form Area (VWFA).
Thankfully, the name says it all.
What do we mean by the dominant occipital lobe? Well, we know that the brain has two hemispheres, one left and one right, and one of them is dominant. The dominant hemisphere is usually the left in a right-handed person, and the right in a left-handed person.
So this area develops as we learn to read, and helps us quickly recognise these symbols that we call letters. You know how, right now, as you’re reading this you don’t spend any effort trying to remember what each of these shapes mean and how they sound? This is because you have the VWFA.
For Pure alexia to happen, a part of the area that connects both cerebral hemispheres (corpus callosum) also needs to be damaged. And this is exactly what usually happens, something called the splenium of the corpus callosum gets damaged as well.
Now, as we mentioned, this area can get damaged, which would lead to someone not being able to read. The crazy thing is they can still write! Imagine writing something and getting all worked up because you can’t read it! (Must be hilarious to watch)
So, what might cause damage to this area?
The most common cause is a stroke, involving the posterior cerebral artery, which supplies blood to the posterior part of the brain (I hope we all know that the occipital lobe is posterior at this point).
Other rare causes that might cause this type of injury are things like encephalopathy, multiple sclerosis, and brain tumours… so basically anything all causes that can lead to brain damage can cause this symptom.
And that’s it. Go tell your friends.
