DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION – PRIMARY and DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION – EARLY CHILDHOOD
The Diploma in Education programme prepares you to teach in Primary Schools. The Diploma in Education programme provides you with the professional knowledge, skills and attributes to become an effective and reflective teacher.

Academic Upgrading Year
Before enrolling on the Diploma in Education programmes, you may have to first complete an Academic Upgrading Year. You will follow academic courses in the following areas:

Creole
English
French
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies.
Diploma in Education Year I, Year II and Year III
During the three years, you will complete courses focussing on four compulsory learning areas: Educational Studies, General Studies Curriculum Studies and Professional Experiences.

Teaching and Learning Strategies
Inclusive Education
Understanding Children Development
Importance of Play in the Early Years (Diploma in Education - Early Childhood only)

You will follow courses focussing on the methodology (strategies) for teaching:

Professional Experiences (Teaching Practice):
This is the work-based experience component of the programme. You will spend around 25% of the time in schools: observing, working with teachers and teaching. In the final year you will spend one complete school term on Teaching Practice in schools.

PROGRAMME DURATION
The Diploma in Education – Primary or the Diploma in Education – Early Childhood programme is offered full time and is of three years duration.

However, you may have to complete an additional year of academic upgrading before enrolling on the three-year Diploma in Education programme.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To join the Diploma in Education Programme, you need five IGCSEs or equivalent in the following:

Grade ‘C’ or better in IGCSE English (or equivalent)
Grade ‘C’ or better in IGCSE Mathematics (or equivalent)
French DELF B1 (minimum 60%) or equivalent
Grade ‘D’ or better in two other subjects at IGCSE (or equivalent).


PROGRESSION CRITERIA
In order to progress on the Diploma in Education programmes you need to successfully complete all courses of the programme, including the Professional Experiences (teaching practice) component. You also need to have recorded at least 90% attendance.

CERTIFICATION
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be awarded a:

Diploma in Education – Early Childhood
The Diploma in Education – Early Childhood qualifies you to teach at Crèche to Primary Two (P2) in Primary Schools.

OR

Diploma in Education – Primary
The Diploma in Education – Primary qualifies you to teach at Primary Three (P3) to Primary Six (P6) in Primary Schools.
