When I first see Veda curled up in her kennel, hugging the back wall I think we have a baby deer with us. Her beautiful coloring, delicate face and amber eyes make me think of a faun in the wild. Veda is scared, she trembles, and even curled up it is clear that she recently had a litter and is likely still lactating. We sit and talk for a while and she eventually takes treats from my hand. Even though she is still nervous I leash her and she gingerly steps out of her kennel. We head for the backyard where we can sit together and become friends. Inside a pen I take Veda off leash to let her explore. Her tail is down and she is still very nervous. She eventually lets me pet her, and after a while crawls into my lap!! SUCCESS. She knows I am a friend, and we sit hugging for a long time. It is clear that Veda wants to trust humans again, she wants to love and be loved, it will just take her a little time. When it is finally time to take her in, I leash her easily and in we go. Later I passed Veda's kennel again and she came forward to see me with a slight tail wag. She came out again towards the end of the day and when left to explore her pen did so with more confidence. She perks up when other dogs stop by to visit. This is a little girl who is looking for a new BFF and will reward her new BFF with love, loyalty, hugs and kisses. How big is your heart?

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.
For more information on a particular dog, email [email protected] but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

King was calm and relaxed during handling and when playing tag with assessor. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. King was also easy to handle when chewing on toys and rawhides. He rushed in confidently towards the friendly dog, but showed no aggression.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor's hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2:1 . Dog gently pulls back his paw
Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish's movement. Dog's body is soft and loose, eyes soft, tail neutral. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek.
Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the rawhide.
Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body, head tall, and ears erect.
A volunteer writes:
King, oh King, what a magnificent dog you are! His majesty, King awaits patiently in his kennel. He is imposing at 93 pounds, well nourished and healthy looking. He has been very well cared for by his previous owner until his recent abandonment. King was found with a limp. He has recovered since then and walks now quite well and beautifully on the leash. No pulling with King, he is a very well behaved dog who heels, sits on command and knows who is the leader. King is without say very much housetrained. King might be royalty but he is also very sweet and likes to sit very close to his caretaker for hugs and kisses. He is actually a very sweet dog who in private behaves like a gentle pussycat... Shut... fingers on the lips... we will not tell. King seems fine with other dogs met in the street or up close in the yard. His stance is proud which is expected from a dog this size and this age. I am sold to King, a gorgeous , friendly and well mannered dog. He will make an excellent, obedient and faithful companion given a chance. King is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
A volunteer writes:
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting royalty yesterday. King and I made friends (wished I had dressed better for the occasion). What an awesome dog he is. At first, looking at him (big dog), I thought to myself, I'm tired, I wonder if I can handle him. I needn't have worried. His leash manners are amazing, he is gentle and delightful and perfect in every way. His coat is lush and healthy looking. He loves to smile and wag his tail, he sits on command and shakes paw - both of them! He is low key, gentle and easy to be with. He posed for his photos like a pro wearing a big pittie smile. A short while later a new volunteer came over to me and was going on about the amazing dog she had just met and walked. Well, turns out it was King! He is fast becoming a favorite, and does not lack for fans. King is looking forward to meeting you - we shouldn't make royalty wait...

PLEASE HELP THESE CATS! (Click on cat photo for more info)
~ DONATE at: www.AngelsOfAnimals.org (put "Rescue of Angel's Gate animals" in Memo)
~ Only serious inquiries please for placement or adoption.
~ Transport arrangements to be made by the adopter/rescue group.
~ Note: Unless considerable donations come in we will not be able to help with transport fees.
~ This post is solely to help the animals of Angel's Gate and to reimburse Angels of Animals for the money they have spent in vetting and finding homes for the animals of Angel's Gate. No funds donated will go to Angel's Gate or it's Founder.
~ Background: The closing of Angel's Gate in New York has been a highly publicized and polarized event, with people either loving or hating it's Founder. We are taking a purely neutral stance with our post and are just trying to get the animals placed, so they won't be euthanized, and possibly to raise some funds for Angels of Animals, a separate non-profit that has spent thousands to vet these animals and find them homes. This ordeal is not the animals fault and hundreds of animals from Angel's Gate have found placement or homes, with only 25 left. The deadline for saving the last 25 is this Sunday, Oct 28th!
