There is more to Umrah than the Haram itself.

Hira Cultural District, 15–20 minutes from Makkah, tells the story of the Cave of Hira without the steep, uneven climb – not suitable for children or elderly parents. The museum gives the full story. Combined ticket, 30–40 SAR.

In Madinah, Dar Al Madinah museum is a short Uber ride from Masjid Nabawi. Worth the detour.

Save this for a quieter afternoon. 🕋

Landed early and your room isn't ready? Don't waste the time.

Email your hotel your estimated arrival time in advance. If the room still isn't ready when you land, store your luggage at the front desk and go straight to the Haram rather than waiting in the lobby.

Chapter 4 of the handbook covers hotel booking and arrival-day strategy in full. Link in bio. 🕋

What did you do the first time your room wasn't ready?

Denied at the Rawdah gate? Don't just walk away.

A denied Nusuk permit can lock your account for a year if you don't resolve it properly. Walking away and trying again later isn't the fix.

The Nusuk Enayah Centre near Gate 20 can override the denial in person, usually within minutes – but only if you go before leaving the area.

This is one of ten problems we've mapped. Follow for the rest.

Save this in case your permit is ever denied at the gate. 🕋

Did you know there was an in-person fix for a denied permit?

If you didn't bring a wheelchair from home, here's the order to try.

Some hotels loan wheelchairs free of charge – Conrad and Swissotel confirmed. The free Haram collection point exists but isn't always guaranteed and can be hard to find on your first day. If you need to buy one, the price gap is significant: Bin Dawood, around 45 SAR, smaller local stores around 20 SAR, versus the Clock Tower mall at around 350 SAR for the same item.

If you buy one, the widely endorsed practice is to leave it inside the Haram as sadaqah at the end of your trip.

Chapter 8 of the handbook covers wheelchair access, cart hire and hotel choices for families in full. Link in bio. 🕋

Did you know the price difference was that large before reading this?

The Madinah taxi scam that looks like a normal handover.

A green taxi driver agrees to take a pilgrim to Makkah, then says he can't go and offers to transfer them to another driver. He drives to a car park, negotiates with a second driver, transfers the bags, and pockets a confirmed 50 SAR commission.

The community's rule: never get into a taxi that then transfers you to another driver mid-route. Get out and find your own transport.

Always check the Uber fare before approaching any taxi, and use it as your ceiling.

This is one of ten problems we've mapped. Follow for the rest.

Save this before your intercity journey. 🕋

Would you have noticed the handover, or assumed it was normal?

"Your eVisa is stuck. Here's what actually works.

""SEND TO EMBASSY"" traps hundreds of applicants every season, and most don't realise Visa on Arrival is a legitimate, fast fallback.

Cancel the stuck application online (an automatic refund of roughly £80 follows) and go straight to the VOA desk on arrival, not the self-service kiosk. VOA typically grants a one-year multiple-entry visa for around 395 SAR.

""I had four eVisa rejections. Flew with Egypt Air, went straight to the VOA desk. I had my visa within five minutes.""

Has your eVisa ever gotten stuck, and did you know VOA was an option?"

How Uber actually works in Makkah and Madinah.

Uber and Careem both operate in both cities exactly as they do at home – set the pickup, see the price before you confirm, no negotiation needed.

The community's rule: always check the Uber fare first, even if you end up taking a taxi. Use it as your price ceiling, never pay more than the app shows.

Near the Haram in Makkah, the Meridien Hotel and Safwah Towers area is a reliable pickup point. In Madinah, both apps work without issue. Jeeny is often cheaper again, but needs a Saudi SIM to set up.

This is one of ten problems we've mapped for pilgrims flying from the UK.

Save this before you land. 🕋

Did you know Uber worked in Makkah before you travelled, or did you find out the hard way?

What Changes After Umrah

There's a kind of change that happens after Umrah that's almost impossible to explain to someone who hasn't been.
Not the dramatic conversion story. Not an overnight transformation.

Something quieter than that — a shift in what matters, a recalibration of where you stand in the world.
"I've only just started researching Islam more after having been born Muslim and neglecting my religion for several years. Almost every day I find a new reason to love this religion more and more. It just fundamentally changed something for me, in a very peaceful way."
— Community member

"I have never quite felt the kind of spiritual connection as I felt in the holy mosques. I guess that is the reason why people yearn to return — to submit yourself without any worry of dunya."
— Community member

This handbook can't tell you what your Umrah will feel like. It can't promise tears, or peace, or transformation.

It can't guarantee your duas will be answered the way you hope, or that you'll come home a changed person.

What it can tell you is what the community has learned across thousands of journeys: standing in that place — however imperfect, exhausted, distracted and human you are when you get there — does something.

Sometimes loudly. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes in ways you won't understand for months.

Chapter 10 is the final chapter. It doesn't have answers — it has honesty.
What's something that changed for you after Umrah that you still find hard to put into words? 🤍

What Umrah Feels Like

It cannot promise tears. It cannot promise peace. It cannot promise you'll come home a different person.

But every pilgrim who has ever stood in that place was once exactly where you are now — reading, preparing, wondering if it would be everything they imagined.

Most of them will tell you it was something else entirely.
That is what is waiting for you. 🤍

Feeling Nothing During Umrah Tawaf
This is the question almost nobody asks out loud — but the community asks it constantly.

"I couldn't feel a connection and I was looking for it. I just continued Tawaf and tried to connect to Allah, which I would say is more important anyway."
— Community member

If you've stood in front of the Kaaba and felt nothing — no tears, no overwhelming wave, nothing close to what you'd imagined — you are far from alone. This is more common than the social media images of weeping pilgrims suggest.

The guidance from the community is clear: the quality of your Umrah is not measured by whether you cried. Tears are one human response among many. They are not a barometer of faith, and their absence is not a verdict on yours.
Many people crying around you may also be struggling with feelings of unworthiness, guilt or fear.

What actually helps, according to the community:
Continue your Tawaf and your dhikr. Don't wait passively for the feeling to arrive.
If a memory helps — a parent who used to make dua, a verse that once moved you — bring it in and let it sit alongside where you are right now.

The moment of connection doesn't arrive on demand. Sometimes it comes during Tawaf. Sometimes days later. Sometimes when you've stopped looking for it entirely.
"I sometimes feel guilty considering my other family members felt emotional but I didn't. And I cry like a baby with simple duas or seeing Muslims in difficulty. It is okay."
— Community member
It is okay.
