We are pleased to announce the selection of 9 fellows for the inaugural Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Fellowship following an intensive and highly competitive 3 day virtual hackathon hosted by AIMS Research and Innovation Centre in late April.
Beginning in June 2026, the fellows will undertake a 6 month fellowship alongside KTT Scientists, contributing to applied research projects that place science and innovation at the service of people and communities. Their work will focus on areas including AI model development, predictive and diagnostic systems, adaptive user centred technologies, and efficient algorithms designed for low resource environments.
Through this fellowship, AIMS RIC continues to strengthen African capacity to develop homegrown solutions that respond to real challenges and contribute to inclusive and sustainable development across the continent.
Congratulations to the selected fellows on this remarkable achievement. We look forward to the collaborations, ideas, and impact that will emerge from this inaugural cohort.

Big news from AIMS Research and Innovation Centre ๐ฃ
We are thrilled to celebrate Gnankan Landry Regis N'guessan, one of our own researchers, whose work has been accepted to ICML 2026, one of the most prestigious machine learning conferences on the planet.
His model, MSN-PINN, does something remarkable: instead of hiding its answers inside a black box, it makes the underlying physical rules visible and understandable. Think crack propagation, heat transfer, disease spread โ AI that does not just work, but explains itself.
Regis initiated this entire research direction himself and developed it here at AIMS, alongside co-author Bum Jun Kim of the University of Tokyo.

What if the machine learning models shaping our world are not as reliable as we think? ๐ค
Most AI models are built to perform well on average. But in safety-critical systems, average is not good enough.
This Thursday, Prof. Abebe Geletu of AIMS Rwanda presents a talk that challenges the foundations of conventional machine learning and makes the case for a smarter, more trustworthy approach: reliability by design. ๐ฌ

Applications are now open for the AIMS Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Hackathon 2026.
The AIMS Research and Innovation Centre is inviting Africaโs scientific innovators to take part in the AIMS KTT Hackathon, a five-day innovation challenge designed to transform scientific expertise into solutions that address real industry challenges.
Participants will work on developing solutions tackling challenges across sectors such as AgriTech, EdTech, FinTech, and HealthTech.
The most promising innovators will be selected for the AIMS KTT Hackathon, with nine fellowships awarded. Selected fellows will undertake a six-month residency in Kigali, where they will develop technical solutions for bottleneck challenges, with the support of a dynamic innovation ecosystem.
This opportunity is open to citizens of African countries with strong experience in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and related disciplines.
Applications close on 31 March 2026.
