We are Team Jalapeño, 3 spicy mates driving 17,000kms across Europe, the Middle East, & Central Asia in support of Cool Earth & Black Dog Institute on the Mongol Rally 2019.

After driving for 51 days, passing through 21 countries and covering 20081 kilometres we got to the finish line!
We also had:
• 32 engine lights
• 35 stalls
• 4 exhaust leaks
• 3 pullovers
• 2 dead tyres
• 1 busted clutch
• 1 tow
• 1 ditch crash
(A lot of fun)

As the last and possibly most challenging country of the rally, Mongolia did not disappoint. Over the 5 days we spent driving through the country we admired the beautiful steppe, got stared at by a lot of angry camels, got lost and confused by the dozen interweaving dirt tracks that constituted roads and broke Murphy's face with a suprise ditch.
Overall we give it 15 being lost in the middle of the night out of 15

Altai is a very cool part of Russia. After driving through arid flatness for days it was very nice to see some mountains and trees.

While appreciating the beautiful mountain scenery we managed to have a tyre blow out and do some mechanic work in a car park. We also saw a pretty chill cow and Preston got a bit excited about some random plants that were growing on the side of the road.

Kyrgyzstan was short and sweet for us.
Our introduction to the country featured a muddy track down a mountain that we drove during a minor snow storm. In the process we dented our (recently fixed) wheel so hard it debeaded the tyre, but that was nothing a little hammering couldn't fix.
After that our trip was pretty uneventful, we got to spend a lot of time in roadworks, saw some cardboard cops and camped in a thunderstorm next to some abandoned buildings.
We give the country 4 we've-really-got-to-stop-denting-our-wheels out of 5

Tajikistan was pretty damn scenic. We drove through Dushanbe and then up onto the Pamir Highway, on the way we got to see some hella nice mountains and transformed our wheels from circles to octagons.
Overall we give it 9.5 wheel dents out of 10

Turns out smuggling the drone through 3 countries was worth it. We had a blast driving across Tajikistan and reaching 4655m at the Ak-Baital Pass on the Pamir Highway, the 2nd highest highway in the world. We managed to make it out the other side relatively unscathed and only turned one wheel into a 50 cent coin...

Uzbekistan was a pretty cool place. We drove from Nukus down to Khiva, Bukhara and then Samarkand.
Despite the very bad roads we had a great time. We got to hang out in some super old school silk road stops, explore a ruined mosque that happened to be in the back yard of our hostel and saw a pretty neat dance/light show at the Registan.

A quick update on our car:
After a brief accidental off-road adventure on the way to the iran-turkmenistan border Murphy developed an exhaust leak so loud it set off a car alarm.
We managed to find some mechanics in an Ashgabat parking lot who located the problem: our exhaust had completely detached itself from the engine.
Fortunately after a few hours, some questionable welding and an even more questionable suspension lift Murphy was better than ever.
The next day on the road from Darvaza to Nukus we managed to bend our (classically flat) sump guard into a 'N' shape. But that was nothing a little stomping and kicking couldnt fix.
Oh we also improved our hazard lights button. @ Turkmenistan

We just spent 4 days in Turkemenistan, a heavily surreal country.
Ashgabat is a city of exclusively white marble buildings, it's roads are almost empty and there are very few people on the foot paths. It feels almost like a theme park (But covered in cameras).
After staying in Ashgabat we drove north to the Darvaza gas crater, a massive burning hole in the middle of the desert.
After camping next to what was essentially the largest gas heater on earth, we drove north again on one of the worst roads we have encountered.
We did sustain some moderate/severe damage to our sump guard but managed to enter Uzbekistan just before the border closed 👌

Our last 6 days driving through Iran have been fantastic.
The Iranian people are some of the most welcoming and friendly we have encountered. The country's natural landscape (while absurdly hot) is beautiful and persian architecture is fascinating.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ would recommend a visit.

Hey it's been a while...seeing as we just entered Turkey I thought i'd give a quick update:
First of all we want to thank everyone a whole bunch for your donations, your generosity has meant we've now raised almost $4000 for our charities Which is pretty bananas.
We are now 10 days into the rally (4 days since the launch), we've been through 9 countries, driven over 3500kms, stalled 8 times and only broken down once (which I think is pretty good going).
